Chinese singer Shang Wenjie has released a new album that she says is for a worldwide audience.

The album "Nightmare" contains nine songs, eight in English and one in French.

The singer, a former French-Chinese interpreter, told reporters that the album's European and American releases would follow, and that she hoped it would help the world gain a better understanding of Chinese music.

Although the songs contain no Mandarin lyrics, Shang did incorporate Chinese elements in the music. The album is a hybrid of ethnic, electronica and goth, the singer explained.

Shang has also launched her own fashion label, "Ma Puce". The name is a French way of saying "my flea".

Shang's fashion taste has attracted the same level of attention as her music. She often appears in public wearing outrageously rebellious outfits, gaining a title of "China's Lady Gaga".

Shang rose to fame after winning the 2006 Super Girl, a Chinese singing competition similar to the American Idol. Before that, she was a French-Chinese interpreter based in Shanghai.
