Though the Chinese name of the film was "Xin Shaolin Si" ("New Shaolin Temple"), it actually tells a different story from the 1982 version of "Shaolin Si", which turned Jet Li into a household name in the mainland.
The new film was set in the 1920s, during which time the warlords in China were fighting with each other. Besides showcasing the Shaolin kung-fu style, the film will show many modern war scenes as well. Director Benny Chan explained that "The usage of modern weapons is in a conflict with traditional kung fu. It's a terrible thing to many kung-fu masters."
To better demonstrate the Shaolin kung fu, superstar Andy Lau spent over three months to learn it. Joining him were three real kung-fu actors, Jackie Chan, Wu Jing and Xiong Xinxin, as well as over 100 monks invited from the Shaolin Temple.
Located in central China's Henan Province, the Shaolin Temple is known as a vital center of Chinese kung fu.
