15 years have bettered Eason's EQ

In a flash, it's been 15 years since Eason Chan stepped onto the scene. One thing he says he has definitely changed is his attitude towards the paparazzi.

When reporters proceeded to ask the Hong Kong superstar about last year's burning rumours about an affair with fellow singer Kay Tse, he displayed that new level of EQ (Emotional Quotient) and chose not to comment. The old Eason would probably have at least got flustered.

Eason was here to promote his new Mandarin album Fifth Floor's Happiness. He held a mini showcase on Sunday, before rushing to perform at the Ren Ci Charity Show that same night.

During this interview, the 35-year-old sincerely repeated an apology he first made two months ago for not being able to come to Singapore earlier. He explained that he's been really busy.

He was at an awards show in Malaysia last Saturday, where he appeared onstage together with Kay. When reporters asked, Eason would only say that his relationship with his wife (Hilary Tsui) hasn't changed, and he only has her to account to.

The crooner joined the industry in 1995 after competing in a singing contest. Today, he is considered one of the generation's best singers. With such remarkable achievements, does he consider his EQ good?

After laughing off the question initially, Eason went into deep thought and systematically broke things down for us.

He said that in the first five of the 15 years, he was curious and full of energy. Things didn't bother him too much. In the middle five, he shot to stardom, something he did not expect. "I wasn't mature enough to handle the attention."

Now, although he may still be stern with the media at times, he has learnt to control his temper.

"In the past, when the paparazzi come after me, I will ask them where they're from and why they're taking photos. Now I'm not bothered anymore. Nonchalance is the best solution, but it's really hard."

However, even with the unwanted attention fame has brought him, Eason wants the public to know he feels extremely fortunate. He said life has been better to him and he doesn't have a major regret yet. He's not someone who plans ahead, and this job allows him that luxury. He even joked that maybe his previous life was terrible, so this is karma, Eason-style.

The frizzy-haired one refuted earlier speculations that he is going to give up his mic to concentrate on an acting career, as singing is both a day job and a passion. He will hold a 17-show concert in Hong Kong in March and April, and is set to release a Cantonese album in March, which he hinted that fans will not be able to recognize him on the album cover.
