So, as seems to be the norm, there is a sort of upset over an author discovering fan-fiction.
She was offended by the porn stuff, and the plagiarism (which is hilarious, because this author fell on the more liberal interpretations when another author was called out for plagiarism), and likened fan-fiction to paedophilia, burglary, violence, stalking, and (recently) white slavery (either as prostitution, or ethnic slavery). In short, she started drama, and has started drama n the past about it.
There's the usual "why write fanfic?" questions popping up, and fans defending their choice to participate. But, you know what, that's all par for the course. It doesn't need defending given the staggering amount of manifestos out there detailing reasons for writing fanfic and drawing fanart.
What's pissing me off is this author herself. I've never heard of her, and what I've read in the last few days about her, and of her writing (who the fuck uses underscores to emphasize when font changes are available-- if that's how she formats her manuscripts, how the hell did she get published?), I'd rather never hear of her again. She whinges about sex between characters, but writes some of the worst sex scenes I've read outside of fanfic (one character's hand is nailed to a table and then he is raped, the "morning after" description uses descriptions of "innards" and "male smugness"). Fine, yes, it can be an "only I'm allowed to" sort of thing that can be very creepy but understandable-- but she's not saying that. She's saying that anyone who plays with her toys is a big meanie who doesn't understand ownership laws (she worked for Disney, I'm not sure that she understands international copyright laws given how fucking skewed Disney is).
If it was just a simple "please don't do this," the subject would be dropped. It won't stop people, but no archive will host them, and the clusters of independent sites with dedication can be targeted and served the C&Ds.
No, she likened it to paedophilia and forced prostitution. But then called her readers "intelligent."
Yeah.
Recently, her backpedaling was "Readers who are moved in creative directions by my work have made jewelry, art, toys, clothing, cosmetics, candles, quilts, and a lot of stuff that I seem somehow to have erased from my memory. [cough] These people are all motivated by love of the world in my books, and I’m both awed and grateful that they find inspiration there."
Which I'm taking to mean that, if you pump out one long, bad romance novel every two to five years, then you had better thank the fans for renewing and maintaining their interest for that period of time. And, if the opposition to fanfiction was so serious, then why hasn't she apparently contacted the archives that host fics and asked them to remove things?
It's a lot of arm-flailing and name-calling, and thank god I now know about another author to avoid like the plague. Half of her fans have their heads so far up her ass that I'm amazed they can see the keys to type up their mindless praise of how "objective" and "sensible" she was.

Other news. Shit's hit the fan with something. I really, really want an apartment that a friend and I looked at the other day. And I'm fine signing the lease. But this girl is so goddamn thoughtless, it's frustrating.
She's currently employed, but when she moves she won't be. Companies don't need to know that. They want to see that you had an income. If you do, you show it. If you won't in the near future, that's okay, they just want to see that you have money. I'm employed, but I have no money. She's employed for the time being, and she has money. Who makes the better tenant?
I need to teach her how to deal with managers. Manipulation is good, most of the time.
I also need a new job, because I'm sick of not knowing week-to-week if my hours are going to be such that I can live off of them, or if I'm going to lose hours and be fucked over by someone stealing my sales. I need something stable.
