If someone said something to you that you thought was in jest but that was horribly offensive and when you joked about it they quickly changed the subject would you be offended? How about if the next day you joked about it again and they, once more, changed the subject immediately?
Would you take this to mean that their joke was really a way of them telling you something seriously?
I have often found that most people, when saying something they really, truly feel, will say it as if it's a joke and then brush it off and change the subject when you joke back.
