Valentine's Day is somewhat different here than back home. For one, the higher expectation seems to be on the men to give a gift to their girlfriend, wife, or secret crush. These gifts vary, but are typically flowers, chocolates, stuffed animals, jewelry, expensive dinner dates, or wedding proposals. For the most part, the day is for established couples.
Friends also exchange small tokens of appreciation. Homemade valentines or cards that you can buy in bulk for a few euros at any large grocery store. I've also seen a few of the girls exchanging carnations or a single rose, this morning.
It's calmer than the tradition back home, but a few friends have been hinting that there is someone I ought to give flowers, today. I'm not sure what to make of it, really. We're having dinner tonight for what she has repeatedly referred to as, "Singles Awareness Day." I could at least get her a corsage.
Best of luck today, everyone. Particularly you, Atobe. Heaven knows what you're thinking throwing a party, tonight. Proceed with caution.
