Um, someone cares?

It is so strange to me that anyone I don't know would care enough about my opinions to post a reply to my last livejournal entry. What started as a mini-rant by me in response to a writer"s block question became a discussion with everyone trying to correct me or each other, except that I don't know any of them. I guess I should keep my posts friends-only, but it never occurred to me that anyone would care enough to post back.

I don't really understand the online fandom culture, where people are so intense about a story that they want to write about and defend it to other people, even claiming that they can see storylines that either the author didn't or that the author had in mind that were cut. As much as I love certain stories, I would never be part of some online community dedicated to any one of them. I joined HP Fan Artists on a whim, but then I've never posted anything there, and hardly ever draw from HP anyway. Why would I want to talk about it through online posts with strangers anyway? I wonder how this whole online fandom phenomenon got started in the first place.

On a side note, I'm watching the appendices for The Two Towers, and I think that working on that film would have been incredibly fun.
