Greg and John were sitting in the kitchen drinking their tea and coffee with Violet walked in. She took the cup of tea offered to her by Greg and smiled. "You two are both saints for putting up with Mycroft and Sherlock. They can be a handful." She chuckled as she took a sip of her tea.
They could hear Sherlock and Mycroft bickering in the next room. They had low voices, as though they were trying not to draw attention to their argument.
Violet sighed. "At least they are not as bad as their father and his brother. Huge rows every time they saw each other. They were never about anything really important, but they seemed to always feel a need to bring up the one major problem between them."
"Mycroft always talks highly of his Uncle," Greg said. "He never mentioned anything negative."
Violet laughed. "Of course not, dear. It was something that was never acknowledge, not really. It was an unspoken rule that no one mentioned the childish antics of the brothers. They were, of course, very careful to keep their arguments in private. But everyone knew when something happened." She sighed. "Everything was a competition between them. What they ate, what type of tea they were going to drink. Even who was walking through the door first. I think that's where Mycroft and Sherlock learned it."
"When did it start?" John asked. "Your husband and his brother."
"I believe it started when they both liked the same girl back in...I think it was towards the end of primary school. Anyway, Robert, my husband, liked her first apparently. Then Richard, his brother, announced that he liked her too. It was blown way out of proportion. They spent so much time fighting each other, they forgot to let her know that they fancied her. She ended up with Robert's friend Thomas." She laughed. "Each of them blamed the other for their loss, yet neither of them could remember the girl's name!" She sighed. "From that point on, from what I can gather, everything became a competition between them."
Violet shook her head, swirling her tea gently as Mycroft did. "And my boys grew up with that and figured that was how they were supposed to be. Although, Richard and Robert could be to blame as well. They did start including the two of them in their games and competitions."
John and Greg both laughed along with Violet. "That makes their...relationship a little more normal," Greg said smiling.
"Really, Mycroft? A pastry?" Sherlock asked as they entered the kitchen. "Why diet at all if you're only going to ignore it?"
Mycroft, although slightly paler than normal, smiled. "Oh, Sherlock. Throwing petty insults around to try and make me not notice that you can barely function without John around any more."
Sherlock's ears went pink and he doesn't respond. He looked at the table and noticing his mother, Greg, and John. His ears went red when he realized they all heard that exchange.
John smiled at Sherlock while Mycroft glanced at Greg. None of them said anything until Violet laughed. "What are we going to do with you two?"
