“Hakkai, let’s just leave. Something tells me these guys are big trouble,” I begged Hakkai for what seemed to be the hundredth time. I turned pleading eyes toward his too polite face.
Hakkai turned his eyes away from the tree line where the two strange men had disappeared and shot me with a slightly annoyed look. “Hakuryuu won’t move without that man, Gojyo. We’ve already gone through this. Besides,” he refocused his gaze on the forest, “I believe I hear then coming back.”
As if on cue the two strangers reemerged and approached us. One with confidence. The other with suspicion. Each one was hauling another body. The redhead cradled the small body closer to his chest when he got close to me and Hakkai. Like we were going to kidnap an unconscious boy.
The redhead’s voice was just this side of sarcastic. “I’m under orders to be civil. So, I’m Schuldig, the little one I’m carrying is Nagi, touch him before he wakes up and I’ll kill you without asking why, the scarred beauty to my right is Farfarello, keep your religion to yourself, and the uptight bastard slung over his shoulder is Crawford, listen to his seemingly random directions and never call him Bradley. Now, let’s go see this Sanzo you’re both dreading bringing us to.”
He had an evil grin on his face that made me wary. But it somehow seemed forced. I stared at his face so intently his eye twitched. I was surprised to feel some satisfaction about it. Then his last statement clicked in my mind. “How the hell do you know about Sanzo?”
The redhead opened his mouth, but Hakkai spoke before he had the chance to answer me. “More importantly, Mr. Schuldig, how would you know Gojyo and I are not looking forward to this meeting?”
He merely chuckled and climbed into the back of the jeep “All in good time, my dears. All in good time.”
The twenty-minute drive back into town was silent. Farfarello trying to keep a hold on Crawford’s body. Schuldig gently holding Nagi. His eyes were closed and his forehead was pressed against the other’s. Hakkai had a thoughtful look on his face. The one that scared me sometimes. It often led to angst on his part and damage control on mine. I was hoping a freak lightening bolt struck us before we had to deal with Sanzo.
Unfortunately, the six of us made it to the inn alive. Hakuryuu transformed back into a dragon and shockingly settled on the Schuldig’s shoulder. I looked at Hakkai in time to see a mix of confusion, surprise, and sadness in his eyes. I glared at the stupid parrot before opening the inn door for Hakkai.
I heard Schuldig whisper admonishingly, “That wasn’t very nice, you know.”
