“I thought they mostly stayed in their holes and ate and smoked until they grew fat.” The elf’s voice was light and teasing, smile bright.

“Well most do,” Bilbo sighed. “And I’d like to get back to that life as soon as I can.”

What a gentle, thoughtful story. I like it very much. I'm greatly enjoying all the gap fillers.

Thank you! Gap fillers are my favorite kind of stories to write. I love to imagine the little moments we don't get to see, and I'm glad to know that you enjoy them as well. :)

Can't be helped. It's how the story goes. :-) You handled it well.

Oh dear, I'm crying. It's--for some reason the image of everyone running around in Erebor, mad with joy at being home and having their place and their gold back, and knowing what's coming...it's just so sad. And that last line is beautiful. My heart aches.

Thank you! And I'm really glad you liked that last line, I had hard time deciding how to end it.

*sniffle* This is so much how Bilbo must have felt: wishing to go home, missing his companions, but knowing it just wouldn't be the same if he stayed with all that had been lost...

I do hope that we see this sort of thing in the movies, these quiet times you show so well.

Thank you so much. :) I hope we get to see some quiet times as well. The parts that focus on the characters and their relationships are my favorite.

Thank you! I wanted the focus to be on the protection the gift provided. And I figured he'd get a vague idea of it's value from the dwarves' reactions anyway. ;) Thank you for reading!
