Post-Reichenbach tropes

I find it curious the way a fandom can develop its own tropes, rather quickly.  One I'm seeing pop up all over Sherlock fandom post-The Reichenbach Fall is "John hallucinates Sherlock."  This leads naturally to "John just thinks he's hallucinating Sherlock," which lends itself to teeth-grittingly uncomfortable drawn-out scenarios that degenerate into overwrought pathos.

Ok, yes, this was exactly the scenario a ficlet of which I reblogged on Tumblr, accurately stating that it had given me chills.  I'm not always immune to overwrought pathos.

But I am reasonably sure that BBC-canon John is not going to develop grief-induced hallucinations.  C'mon, people, he was a soldier!
