Kris doesn't like wearing heels.

For Ang, who I clearly love more than I realize. Prompt is this.

walk a mile in my shoes

Kris, who isn't used to wearing heels, is slightly grumpy as she's forced to wear a pair for a black tie event for her boyfriend's family. It's a whole evening of socializing with people with big family names and big family backgrounds. It's also a whole lot of walking. In heels. Kris is a 'flats' kind of girl. She's over six feet tall and heels are just a no-no for her, especially since she actually wants to date, because guys normally get intimidated by too tall girls.

She sighs as she slinks back to the wall by the buffet table and hopes that no one talks to her anymore. She looks around the ballroom and spots her boyfriend near the stage. He's talking to the mayor or some government official and she just has to smile at how handsome he looks. Kyungsoo looks perfect, especially in settings likes these, because this is what he was born to be. Eldest son of one of the richest and most aristocratic families in the country, destined to do great things, like planning to improve the country's economic status. Or more. Kris isn't really sure at this point anymore and she's too tired at the moment to think about her boyfriend and his amazing life.

Finding an empty table, she takes a seat and sighs. She thinks about the sweaters and comfortable skirts that she likes to wear. She also wants to take her contact lenses off and wear her glasses instead. Comfort is Kris' word. She likes snuggles and cuddles and everything warm and cozy. But there are sacrifices to be made. Not that it's hard to do for Kyungsoo. She loves him after all.

"Are you tired?" Kyungsoo asks, taking a seat beside her. She didn't even notice him approaching.

"I'm fine," Kris assures him. She shifts in her seat, ignoring the pain on her feet. It's unnecessary to make Kyungsoo worry about something so trivial when there are so many others to impress.

"Well then," Kyungsoo says with a smile, standing up and offering her his hand. "Do you want to dance?"

Kris bites her lip because oh god she can't move anymore in these heels, but she smiles graciously and puts her hand in Kyungsoo's. He gently guides her to the middle of the dance floor, wrapping his arms around her waist as they sway to the soft, jazzy music.

"You look beautiful tonight," Kyungsoo tells her, eyes moving up because Kris is taller than Kyungsoo after all. Damn heels. Kris laughs and shakes her head.

"What wouldn't I do for you?" she teases him.

"I know," Kyungsoo seriously responds "I'm going to make it up to you," he promises her. "Tonight." She raises an eyebrow at him and his cheeks pink. "Not like that," he blurts out, cheeks turning redder. "Although," he continues, a smirk gracing his features. "I wouldn't mind that either. And I know you won't as well." He wiggles his eyebrows up and down.

Kris rolls her eyes, slightly tightening his arms around him. "We are in public and you are harassing me," she says but laughs. "What will we do? And tonight? Don't you still have half of the country to talk to?"

"I know it's tiring and it's normally not your scene but--" Kyungsoo tries to explain, face in a frown.

"Oh stop." Kris rolls her eyes and presses a chaste kiss to his cheek. She hunches a bit when she does but it doesn't matter because Kyungsoo's eyes are bright with happiness. "I love you, okay, so it doesn't matter."

Who would have known that Kris bumping into one of the cutest but manliest guys she's ever met would come to this? She was a college student; completely fine with being unnoticed because she came to Stanford to study and not to find a boyfriend, but meeting Kyungsoo kind of changed all that. Because Kyungsoo wasn't only handsome and funny and sweet, he was also incredibly smart and driven and passionate. All of those combined just made Kris fall hard for him. She liked that he was able to balance work and play so well, and so elegantly. It was like he was truly born to do it. The way he fit her into his life was such a pleasant surprise, too. He made time for her and never made her feel like she was intruding or that she was being a hindrance to his ambitions. Her made her a part of everything. Now, in their graduating year, four years later, they are still going strong.

After their dance, Kyungsoo manages to excuse the both of them from the party. He whisks her away to one of the hotel rooms and gives her a set of clothes that is so comfortable that Kris throws herself at him in joy.

Kris gets dressed in the exact set of clothes she'd been dreaming of earlier, fluffy sweater and a skirt. She takes off her contact lenses and wears her black-rimmed glasses. It's too bad that there isn't an extra pair of shoes for her, but she'll take what she can get. Kyungsoo is wearing simple khaki pants and a cardigan when she comes out and she can't help but sigh at how perfect he looks. So homey and so simple.

"Where are we going?" Kris laughs when they manage to get out of the hotel unnoticed.

Kyungsoo doesn't say anything and merely crouches down in front of her. Kris stares at him for a bit before he speaks. "Get on."

"Are you serious?" Kris laughs in surprise. Sure, she and Kyungsoo used to do this back in the day, but now?

"C'mon," Kyungsoo says, patting his back.

Kris gingerly gets on Kyungsoo's back, wrapping her arms and legs around him. Giving him a kiss on the neck, she asks, "Where are we going?"

"We're going to get some ice cream," he announces happily.

Kris buries her laugh in his shoulder and sighs contentedly as Kyungsoo starts humming the song that they just danced to. Sometimes it's so hard to pinpoint a specific thing that she likes about Kyungsoo. Because he's all of these wonderful things and then, suddenly, he does something like this and Kris feels like she's being swept off her feet all over again.

Ice cream wasn't much of an affair since the convenience store was almost closing and they had to leave at once. On the way back, Kris insists on walking, despite feet pain, because it wouldn't do to break Kyungsoo's back so early on in his life. So they walk peacefully, hand-in-hand, finishing their ice cream.

Until Kris' heel gets caught in a crack on the sidewalk and her ice cream falls to the ground. She pouts on her wasted ice cream, seriously contemplating if it was too much trouble to go back and buy a new one. But then Kyungsoo sighs and crouches down in front of her again.

"I am not letting you carry me back," Kris decides firmly. She pulls him up.

"Fine, wear my shoes then."

Before Kris can even process what he said, Kyungsoo's already taking her heels away from her feet and sliding her feet in his big boots. She looks a bit ridiculous in overly big footwear but Kyungsoo kisses her and calls her cute. She then watches him eye the pair of heels in his hands before shrugging and putting them on.

"Oh my god, you're not kidding," she gasps. "You're actually going to wear them?"

"Well you know what they say about walking a mile in someone else's shoes," he quotes, wiggling as if trying how safe it would be for him to walk in them. "Let's go."

Kris feels like her heart is going to burst and isn't quite sure what to do about it. So she does the next best thing and practically jumps at him and kisses him. Hard.

"If we continue this, we are going to be swapping more than shoes," Kyungsoo mutters breathlessly, pulling away, "And considering we're in public, I don't think you'd want that."

"I love you." Kris makes a weird face as she says this because, really, she can't express just how much love she has for this man. And all because he offered to wear her heels for her. "Like I love you so much I don't know how fair it is that you're mine. I'll have to think of a way to repay you."

Kyungsoo chuckles and kisses her, long and sweet. When he pulls away, he looks into her eyes. "I can think of something you can do to repay me," he tells her seriously, but his eyes are bright with something that makes Kris' heart skip. "But we both know... just not yet."

Kris' eyes fill with tears and she hugs him because this tiny big oaf knows exactly the right things to say. "I hate you," she mumbles through his collar.

"I know," he laughs.

"Now take my shoes off," she demands, watching as he takes them off and goes barefoot instead. "You're going to break them."

They probably look like an odd couple, a girl walking with too big shoes and a guy barefoot and holding a pair of heels. But to Kris, it spells exactly the kind of relationship they have and shows exactly everything that Kris loves about Kyungsoo.
