Jooyeon watched as Kangin and Tiffany danced. Kangin was holding Tiffany so carefully as if he was afraid she would break. Meanwhile, Tiffany was forcing herself not to smile so much. She chuckled. It was so obvious that they both liked each other a lot.

“Hey,” Taeyeon said, sitting on the chair beside her. “What are you doing here by yourself?”

“Just watching,” Jooyeon answered. She looked at her. “You and Siwon made up, right?”

Taeyeon smiled brightly. “Yeah. Just some stupid misunderstanding,” she said.

“Good,” Jooyeon said contentedly.

“Why aren’t you dancing?” Taeyeon questioned.

“I’m fine right here,” Jooyeon honestly said. “It’s fun watching everyone have fun.”

“It would be more fun if you had fun yourself,” Taeyeon pointed out. “Are you sure you’re going to be okay by yourself?” she then asked when she saw Siwon waving at her.

Jooyeon chuckled. “Go and make out with your boyfriend,” she said, shooing her away. Taeyeon turned very red and left without another word.

Jooyeon went back to watching her friends. Donghae and Hyukjae, who were probably the silliest of the bunch, were dancing with each other. They were also arguing who the girl should be between the two of them.

“Having fun?” Eunhye slid onto the seat that Taeyeon previously occupied. Before Jooyeon could answer, she went on, “Of course you are. How can you not have fun when you’re surrounded by such hot boys?”

“I’m sorry?” Jooyeon asked, feeling confused.

Eunhye laughed, throwing her head back dramatically. “I really shouldn’t have asked.” She gave her a look then smiled. “Do you really think you can get away with what you did?”

“What I did…?” Jooyeon repeated curiously. She still couldn’t believe that this girl was Heechul’s cousin.

“I told you to stay away from Hyukjae and Donghae, didn’t I?” Eunhye refreshed her memory. “But you ignored my wishes.”

“I really didn’t see the need to stay away,” Jooyeon responded, standing her ground. “We’re friends. I’m sorry if you can’t accept that.”

“Answering back now, I see,” Eunhye remarked. “I suppose having a queenka as a best friend and hanging out with kingkas has gone to your head.”

Jooyeon took a deep breath. “Eunhye, look,” she began. “I’m not going to say sorry for being friends with Hyukjae, Donghae and the others. I really like being with them-.”

“Of course you do,” Eunhye interrupted her harshly. “Where else can you practice your specialty?”

“What?” Jooyeon asked, starting to feel irritated at her nonsensical remarks.

“It’s really no wonder,” Eunhye continued. “I’m not surprised at all. If I were in your shoes, it would be very hard to contain myself. Being around such hot guys, I wouldn’t be able to control myself as well.”

“What are you talking about?” Jooyeon repeated, baffled. The girl was weirder than she thought. What was she on about?

Instead of answering, Eunhye giggled. “So which one are you eyeing?” She looked thoughtful for a second. “Hankyung? No, doesn’t seem like your type. Shindong? Of course not. Kangin and Siwon are taken-I don’t think you’ll go for them. It’d better not be Hyukjae or Donghae and please not my cousin.”

“I really don’t get what you’re say-,” Jooyeon cut in.

“It’s Kyuhyun, isn’t it?” Eunhye said, not letting her finish. She chuckled. “Good choice. I hear he’s game for anything. He’s really good, too. That’s what I hear at least.” She shrugged.

“Eunhye, I really don’t understand what you’re talking about,” Jooyeon told her, looking lost.

“Stop looking so innocent,” Eunhye said with a smirk. “I know who you are. You don’t have to pretend around me.” She paused. “I’m really surprised that Taeyeon introduced you to her friends, knowing what you’re like.” She shrugged again. “I suppose that’s what best friend’s are for, helping each other out, whether good or bad.”

“Eunhye-,” Jooyeon began again.

“Stop it with the virtuousness, okay?” Eunhye snapped. “I already told you. I know your secret.” She smiled almost evilly. “Jungsoo oppa told me all about it.”

Eunhye chuckled as she watched all the color drain from Jooyeon’s face. “That should make you stay away from them.”

“Best party yet, Heechul-ah,” Hankyung said, putting an arm around him and grinning like a drunken person, which he was.

“Aish your breath,” Heechul replied, making a face. “But thank you.”

“The food is really good,” Shindong seconded. “The best yet. Or maybe I’m just hungry.”

“You’re always hungry,” Kyuhyun reminded him, chuckling.

They were seated at the couches, resting from all the dancing and playing they’d been doing.

“Hyung seems to have been hit hard,” Donghae commented as he watched Kangin dance and laugh with Tiffany.

“You think?” Hyukjae said in sarcasm. “He went shopping with her and carried everything. He even dragged me and Kyu along.” He shook his head.

“I would appreciate it if you didn’t include me in those kinds of things,” Kyuhyun said, looking pointedly at Hyukjae.

Hyukjae smiled sheepishly. “I didn’t want to be alone.”

“You weren’t alone,” Kyuhyun argued. “Taeyeon and Jooyeon were there.”

“That would still have left me by myself,” Hyukjae insisted. “They would go shopping and talk about clothes…” He shuddered.

“Jooyeon practically didn’t shop,” Kyuhyun jogged his memory. “You two were talking all the time.”

“And you were jealous, weren’t you?” Hyukjae shot back, grinning like a little boy.

“These two,” Heechul said, snickering.

“You bought her the dress, right?” Hyukjae then asked Kyuhyun.

“What dress?” Shindong, stopping to eat, wanted to know. The others looked on curiously. Kyuhyun merely cleared his throat.

“The dress she’s wearing now?” Hankyung asked. They all looked over at Jooyeon.

After a couple of seconds, Shindong asked, “Is she supposed to be with Eunhye by herself?” The two girls seemed to be chatting it up quite a bit.

Donghae and Hyukjae both stood up to go to her when they saw Jooyeon stand up rigidly and walk towards the veranda. Eunhye’s smirk didn’t escape anyone.

“Hyukjae, you should go after her,” Heechul said.

Hyukjae didn’t need to be told twice. He rushed out to the veranda, stopping in his tracks when he saw Siwon and Taeyeon locked in a passionate embrace. He coughed loudly. Siwon and Taeyeon separated, both red in the face.

“Sorry,” Hyukjae mumbled. “But did you see where Jooyeon went?” He looked around and saw a flash of white by the seashore. “Never mind.” He hurried down the stairs.

“Hyukjae, what’s wrong?” Taeyeon called after him.

Jooyeon sat on the sand, hugging her knees. She didn’t care whether her dress was getting dirty or whether it was too short. She just didn’t care. Burying her face in her knees, Eunhye’s voice echoed in her head. I know your secret. Jungsoo oppa told me about it.

How did she know Jungsoo? And why would he tell her? She groaned softly. Of course he was planning something like this. He did tell her before they went their separate ways that he was going to come back. Is this why he’s been calling her? Is he starting his revenge?

So which one are you eyeing? This really wasn’t the best time for this to come out. She was starting to really fit in. They were friends to her now. They weren’t just strangers anymore. Those boys… they mean a lot to her. What would happen if they knew? Would they still like her? Would they still want to be her friend?

“Of course they wouldn’t,” she whispered to herself. Why would they want to be associated with someone like her? If they found out, it would all be over. She would have to leave and start over somewhere.

Realizing this, she began to cry. The boys were really nice people. They took care of her. But they weren’t saints. They would definitely feel some sort of aversion towards her. She was pretty sure even Taeyeon won’t be able to do anything about it.

All of a sudden, she felt a coat being put on her. Looking up, she put her legs down on the sand, fixing her dress. It was Hyukjae.

“Oppa,” she began, hurriedly wiping her tears. It was a good thing it was dark. “What are you doing here?”

“Sshh,” Hyukjae responded, putting a blanket over her legs and sitting beside her. He propped his knees up and resting his arms on it, looking at the water.

“Oppa,” she began again, glancing behind her. “You should be enjoying the party.” Starting to stand up, she went on, “The others will be wondering where you went.”

He pulled her back down and fixed the blanket and coat on her. “Don’t worry about it. It’s nice out here.”

They were quiet for a while. The tears had left Jooyeon, but there was an ache in her heart. Hyukjae just sat down beside her, not saying anything. But he knew there was something wrong. He could feel it with just the way she sat down there and tried hard not to cry.

“You know,” Hyukjae then started, breaking the silence. “I’m the youngest in the family.” He smiled as she looked at him. “My parents and my brothers… they always babied me, always making sure that I was doing fine, that I had everything I need… When they asked me if something was wrong, I always told them I was fine even when there was really a problem.”

“Oppa,” Jooyeon interrupted quietly.

“It’s wrong to keep problems to yourself,” he said, not letting her finish. He looked at her, sighing. “Why won’t you just tell us what’s wrong?”

She shook her head. “Nothing’s wrong.”

His face formed a cross of a smile and a smirk. “You’re a bad liar, you know that? We could always tell if something’s wrong. We’re not stupid.”

“I never said you were,” she said at once.

“Then don’t deny that there’s a problem,” he told her. “We’re your friends. Whatever it is, we’ll help you.”

She took a deep breath and stared at the splashing waves. “There is a problem,” she finally admitted. “But… I just can’t tell you right now. I don’t have the courage.”

“Is it that bad?” he asked gently, looking concerned.

“For me, it is,” she answered. Tears were starting to form in her eyes so she smiled and brushed them away. Looking at him, she said, “Everything’s going to be fine.” She smiled wider, her tears falling to her cheeks. “Everything’s going to be fine,” she repeated as if saying to herself.

Hyukjae, not knowing what else to do, pulled her to him in a hug. That did it. Jooyeon started to sob.
