No matter how many times I psyched myself up, I still couldn’t hold back the tears that were threatening to fall from my eyes. For two weeks, I had been preparing myself for this moment. I promised myself that I wouldn’t cry.

“Oh Hye Rin,” my friend and roommate comforted me. She put an arm around my shoulders and squeezed lightly. “I thought you said you were ready.”

“It’s harder than I thought,” I muttered. Blinking my unshed tears away, I turned towards my suitcase, which lay open on the bed. It contained the whole life I had built when I moved to Singapore to study for four years.

“You’ll be fine,” Min Young told me, walking over to the closet to check if I left anything. She then sat back down on the bed, beside my suitcase. “You’ll see your sister again.”

“Yeah, that’s true,” I agreed as I packed a pair of jeans that I found under my bed. As I was fixing my baggage, I found a brown envelope sneakily placed in between my shirts. I got it out and stared at it. When Min Young squirmed, I raised an eyebrow at her. “This doesn’t happen to be yours, does it?”

“Er,” was her only answered, which immediately confirmed my hunch.

Opening the brown envelope, I wondered what I was going to find inside. It was filled with letters, cards and, even a CD. “Dear Donghae, I love you. I think about you all the time…” I looked at her curiously. “Who’s Donghae? Do you have a boyfriend in Korea I don’t know about?”

Min Young’s eyes nearly bulged out of their sockets as she took in what I said. I could tell that she was carefully choosing the words she was going to tell me. Her mouth twitched every time she was upset with me about something. I bit my lip, forcing myself not to laugh.

“How.many.times.do.I.have.to.tell.you?” she growled, her nostrils flaring. Suddenly, I knew what this was all about.

“Is he a member of that singing group that you love?” I asked, interrupting her before she started her tirade.

Min Young was a fan girl at heart. She was always going on about these musical acts that she followed, about how they looked so handsome, so adorable, how they were such amazing singers and such nice people. To which I always responded with I don’t care. I refused to be corrupted with music of the Korean idols. I didn’t believe in their music. It was always the typical, auto-tuned music, which showcased their lack of musical talent. I preferred real music, like the ones of Clazziquai, G.O.D., among others.

“They are not a singing group in the way you condescendingly describe it! They’re not like a choir!” Min Young burst, standing up and gesturing around wildly. “They’re Super Junior for crying out loud! They’re the biggest and most popular idol group in Korea right now!”

“Okay, okay,” I responded, finally letting out a chuckle. I returned all the contents of the brown envelope inside. “So what do you want me to do with this? There’s no way I’m going to stake out outside some office building just so I could hand this to them.”

She gave me her sweetest and nicest smile as she walked over to my side. “But I thought your sister was a stylist for some celebrities? I was thinking that she could…” She gave her best and cutest pout.

“I don’t know who my sister does styling for, but I’ll do my best,” I told her, rolling my eyes and putting the envelope on top of my shirts. Hae Won, my sister, vaguely and rarely ever mentioned what she did. All I know for sure was that she was a stylist.

Min Young squealed like a little child. She jumped around the room, bringing me along with her as she had her arms around me. “I love youuuuuuu,” she said in a singsong voice. She was too easy to please.

Hauling my suitcase and bags to the living room, I stopped to take one last look around. This was it. The final moments. I should be happy that I was finally leaving for Korea. It was the homecoming that I’d been waiting for. But now that it was here, it felt like I was leaving home instead.

“I’m going to miss you,” Min Young admitted softly, gently grabbing my hand.

“And I you,” I replied, looking away. Expressing feelings was never my strongest quality.

“Look on the bright side, we’ll see each other in a month,” she reminded me with a teary grin. “So that gives you a month to find Super Junior for me and give my letters.”

I rolled my eyes. That group was probably the only reason why she wanted to visit me in Korea. Even so, I would accept it. “I said I would give them to my sister, not find them myself.”

Min Young laughed at me and gave me a tight hug. I really was going to miss her. Singapore would’ve been a much scarier place if she hadn’t been around.

As we drove to the airport, I couldn’t help but think about this new chapter in my life. It seemed like it was just yesterday when I arrived in Singapore, scared out of my wits, scolding myself for wanting to be so independent that I left home to study in a completely different country. The feeling was the same now. I wondered what was going to happen when I come back home.
