“Hey little girl!” Heechul greeted Jooyeon as she came out of her math class. He was with Kangin, who was leaning against the wall across from the room.

“Hey!” Jooyeon greeted them with a smile. “What are you guys doing here?” She looked around and saw the longing stares of her boy-crazy classmates. It wasn’t everyday that upperclassmen visited sophomore classes, much less visit someone specific.

“Is it so weird that we came here to pick you up for lunch?” Kangin asked innocently.

“Uh yes?” Jooyeon said. “You aren’t checking some younger meat out, are you?” she teased him.

Heechul chuckled beside him. “He already tried that once and it didn’t work out.”

“You asked a sophomore out?” she asked Kangin, grinning. “Who? And how come I didn’t know about it?”

“Because you weren’t around yet when it happened,” Kangin mumbled, glaring at Heechul for bringing it up.

“Oh,” she said. “So who was it? Someone I know?”

“It’s someone you know very well,” Heechul said, winking at her.

It took Jooyeon a couple of seconds to realize what that meant. Then she gasped and tugged at Kangin’s arm. “You asked Taeyeon out?” she giggled.

“Yeah yeah,” Kangin muttered, looking straight ahead. “She said she wasn’t ready.”

“But a couple of weeks later, we spotted her holding hands with Siwon,” Heechul shared. “Turns out, Siwon had secretly asked her out.”

“How could they keep something like that a secret?” she asked curiously.

“Beats me,” Heechul said with a shrug. “But Kangin here was heartbroken.” He patted his friend’s back.

“Oppa, I can help you look for someone,” Jooyeon nicely offered. “There are a lot of nice girls in school.”

“Like who, Eunhye from cheerleading?” Heechul blurted out with a loud laugh.

Kangin made a face. “No thanks.”

“Okay, I suppose your definition of nice is different from mine,” Jooyeon said. She shrugged. “So really, what are you guys doing here?”

“We’re picking you up for lunch,” Heechul repeated, pretending to look annoyed. “Why is that so hard to believe?”

Suddenly, Jooyeon felt her phone vibrate in her pocket. She fished it out and answered it without looking at the caller ID. “Hello?”

“It’s Hyukjae.”

“Hi oppa!” she greeted, smiling, even though he couldn’t see her.

“Are you with Heechul hyung?” he asked.

“Yeah,” she said, glancing at Heechul and Kangin who were talking about something beside her. “I’m with Kangin oppa, too.”

“Okay, that’s good,” he said. “Just wanted to make sure. Donghae and I are on the field. I’m helping him get ready for the soccer team tryouts next week.”

“Really?” she said interestedly. “Can I come?”

“The field’s muddy, though,” he warned her. “And you have to eat your lunch.”

“Stop babying me, oppa,” she said, rolling her eyes. Heechul and Kangin looked at her. “I’ll be there in a bit.” She ended the call.

“Hyukjae, huh?” Kangin said. “He’s not babying you.”

“Yes, he is,” she said. “You guys really didn’t have to pick me up from class. You don’t have to do what he says.”

“You’re insulting us, you know,” Heechul said. “Nobody orders us around.”

Jooyeon stopped walking, looking surprised and embarrassed. “I’m sorry, oppa,” she said at once, bowing. “I didn’t mean to.”

Kangin chuckled and put an arm around her. “Don’t listen to him. What he’s trying to say is, we’re not babying you. We just really care and we want to look out for you.” He ruffled her hair. “It’s our initiative. It just so happens that we all have the same initiatives.”

When they reached the cafeteria, Jooyeon stopped and said she’ll see them later.

“Where are you going?” Heechul asked her.

“The field,” she said. “I’m going to watch Hyukjae oppa and Donghae oppa practice.”

“Oh your cute anchovy and prince fish, huh?” Kangin teased.

Jooyeon’s cheeks turned pink. Once in a while, they still liked to bring up her verbal diarrhea during Hyukjae’s party. It never failed to make her blush and stammer, which is probably why the boys liked bringing it up so much.

“Um, so I’ll, uh, see you guys later,” she muttered, looking at the floor. Heechul and Kangin couldn’t help but laugh.

“See you later then,” Kangin said, waving and walking in the cafeteria.

Jooyeon walked, or rather skipped, towards the field. She had never seen Hyukjae or Donghae play soccer before. She only heard them talk about it a lot. And Donghae was trying out. She slowed to a walk when she realized that she and Donghae were somewhat awkward around each other these days. It was all because of what she said when she had gotten drunk. It wasn’t a problem in the beginning, but since the boys made a big deal out of it and kept on teasing us, he’d somewhat put a distance between them.

She sighed. She shouldn’t have drunk so much that night. She should’ve never been left alone with alcohol. Suddenly, she wondered if she should still go to the field or if she should just go back to the cafeteria.

“You alright?”

Jooyeon jumped and looked to her right. “Heechul oppa, what are you doing here?” She stopped walking. “I thought…”

“I’ll bring you to the field,” he said. They started walking again. “What were you thinking about?”

“Just… stuff,” she vaguely answered.

“Donghae, right?” he said straightforwardly. She turned to him then looked away almost immediately. “He’s not really avoiding you, you know that, right?”

“How is he not really avoiding me while avoiding me?” she wanted to know, looking at him earnestly.

“He’s giving you space because he knows it makes you uncomfortable,” he explained. “He doesn’t want you to feel so uneasy around him that you’d start avoiding him.”

“I would never do that,” she quietly said.

“That’s what I told him,” he said. “But that’s Donghae. He’s a gentleman.”

They reached the field and, true enough, it was muddy. The sprinklers had been turned on that morning. They watched as Donghae and Hyukjae ran around on the other edge the field, kicking the ball in turn, mud splattering everywhere. Jooyeon felt relived that the boys had thought of changing into soccer clothes and shoes.

“Anchovy! Fishy!” Jooyeon yelled, jumping up and down, waving her arms.

Both boys stopped running and turned to them. Hyukjae and Donghae waved back, Hyukjae, smiling his gummy smile. They then jogged over.

“Hey,” Hyukjae said, grinning. Donghae smiled behind him.

Jooyeon shyly smiled back. She had to admit, Donghae looked good in a soccer uniform. “Are you ready for next week, oppa?” she asked him.

“Yeah, I think so,” Donghae said.

“He’s ready,” Hyukjae said definitely, putting an arm around him. “He’ll knock them all dead.”

“We’ll watch you try out,” Heechul suggested.

“Really?” Donghae asked hopefully, his eyes moving to Jooyeon.

Jooyeon, who didn’t notice anything, had to be nudged by Heechul rather painfully. “Ouch! Of course, oppa,” she said at once, rubbing her arm. She smiled warmly at him. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Donghae grinned like a little kid. “Alright then.”

“I’ll see you guys later,” Heechul then said. “You going to be okay by yourself?” he asked Jooyeon.

She nodded. “Thank you for walking with me, oppa!”

Heechul smiled and affectionately ruffled her hair. He nodded at the two boys and left. Hyukjae and Donghae then looked at each other, silently communicating. Donghae pointed at himself, which made Hyukjae shake his head and snicker.

“What are you two doing?” Jooyeon asked curiously.

In response, Hyukjae turned his back on her and bent forward. “On you go,” he said, pointing at his back.

“What? Why?” she asked, taken aback, glancing at Donghae.

“It’s less muddy over there,” Hyukjae explained, straightening up and looking at her, “and we don’t want to have you watching by yourself so far away.”

“I’m fine here,” she promised them. “You don’t have to.” She looked at the field. “Or I can just-.”

“You can’t,” Donghae interjected. “You’ll ruin your shoes and your socks.”

“C’mon, don’t you trust us?” Hyukjae then asked.

“Of course I trust you, oppa,” Jooyeon answered right away.

“Then get on,” Hyukjae said, bending over and pointing at his back.

Jooyeon climbed on Hyukjae’s back without hesitation this time, her legs supported by his waist and arms, her arms around his neck. Hyukjae made sure she was comfortable and made Donghae check whether she wasn’t showing any body parts that didn’t need to be seen, which embarrassed both parties.

“You’re light as a feather,” Hyukjae said as they walked across the field.

“I hope you’re not sarcastic,” Jooyeon muttered.

“I never am,” Hyukjae honestly said, which she had to admit was true. “Your hair is tickling me,” he then added.

Jooyeon hadn’t noticed that her hair had fallen to the sides of Hyukjae’s face. She then flipped it on her back. As she did so, she realized that Donghae hadn’t said anything. “Fishy,” she called him. He looked at her, a bit startled. “Are you excited for the try outs?”

“More nervous than excited,” Donghae told her.

“You’ll be fine, oppa,” she confidently stated. “It wouldn’t be a surprise if you got in.”

Donghae looked at her appreciatively. “Thanks Jooyeon!”

Hyukjae carefully let Jooyeon down when they reached the other edge of the field, where some benches were placed under the big trees. There, Jooyeon watched the two boys battle it out on the field. She wasn’t much of a soccer fan, but she could tell that they were talented at the sport, especially Donghae. The passion was just emanating from him. She really knew that he was going to make it to the varsity team. He was going to be their star.

“What happened?” Taeyeon asked when she saw Jooyeon. She pointed at her socks. It had splatters of mud on it.

“Oh I hadn’t realized that I got some on me,” Jooyeon said. “I watched fishy and anchovy practice soccer during lunch.” She lifted her leg up and tried to scratch the mud off, but it was no use. “I hope omma doesn’t get mad at me. It’ll be hard to take this off.”

“So where’s Hae and Hyuk?” Siwon asked, looking around. Classes had just ended for the day and Taeyeon and Siwon were deciding what they should do after school.

Jooyeon shrugged. “I haven’t seen them since lunch. Listen, I think I’ll go home. I feel like sleeping.”

“Are you sure?” Siwon asked.

“Yeah.” Jooyeon nodded firmly.

“Are you feeling okay?” Taeyeon asked.

“I’m fine,” Jooyeon said, pushing her back to Siwon. “You guys go out and have fun. Date!”

Taeyeon and Siwon laughed along with her. Jooyeon waved at them and left the school building. As soon as she passed the school gates, she looked behind her to make sure that Taeyeon and Siwon couldn’t see her anymore. When she felt sure, she was out of sight, she turned left. The road home was to the right.

She decided that she was going to go to the mall. Heechul’s birthday was coming up and she wanted to get something for him.

“Where are you going?” a voice behind her asked.

A voice that she knew well. Too well. Slowly, she turned around. Sure enough, it was him. The guy was leaning against the school’s wall. He wore dark jeans, a dark jacket and a black cap.

“Oppa, what are you-?” she began.

He pushed himself off the wall and walked towards her. She took a couple of steps back, but that wasn’t any match for his long strides. Soon, he was towering over her, his fingers on her cheek. She trembled.

“I missed you, Jooyeon,” he whispered. “Did you miss me, too?”

“Oppa,” she responded, shivering in fear.

He leaned even closer to her, his eyes locked on hers. But before he could do anything else, a couple of students emerged from the school and were walking towards them. He took a step back and smirked.

“I’ll see you again,” he told her. “Wait for me.” Without another word, he fixed his cap and went on his way.

Jooyeon stood there, staggered. She couldn’t move. How did he find her? What did he want?

Suddenly, she felt a hand on her arm. She flinched and let out a cry.

“Jooyeon, it’s me.”

Jooyeon looked up and saw Kyuhyun with Hankyung and Kangin behind him. “Oppa,” she said in a sigh of relief and suddenly lurched forward, wrapping her arms around him and burying her face in his chest.

“What’s wrong?” Kyuhyun asked, hugging her back tightly. “You’re shaking.”

He looked at Kangin and Hankyung above her head. Without a word, Kangin and Hankyung immediately sprinted after the guy. Kyuhyun got his phone from his pocket and began calling someone.

Jooyeon closed her eyes shut, clutching onto Kyuhyun. There were so many things going through her head that she couldn’t process them all. She couldn’t think straight. But she had to be calm. It was over. For now. Without warning, she felt herself being pushed away. She whimpered, her eyes still shut.

“Jooyeon,” Kyuhyun gently called, looking at her. Her eyes were closed and her cheeks were tear-stained. “Hey,” he began again. “It’s me.” He tenderly touched her cheek. “You can open your eyes.”

Slowly, Jooyeon followed and looked back at him. “Oppa,” she whispered.

“Shh,” Kyuhyun said, shaking his head. “Are you feeling better?” he asked. She merely nodded. “Okay. You’re safe now. We’ll go to Hyukjae’s house.”

“But omma,” she began to interject.

“I’ve already called her and she prefers if you’re there,” Kyuhyun said. “I also called Taeyeon.”

She sighed. “I wish you didn’t.”

“Jooyeon,” Kyuhyun started.

“She and Siwon were going to go out,” she told them. “She’s always busy with me. It doesn’t seem like they ever get to go out.”

He chuckled. He couldn’t believe that she still thought of others’ well being at a time like this. “We’re talking about Taeyeon here. She never likes going out, unless it’s eating out. Besides, they were going to Hyukjae’s house anyway.”

They began walking back to school, where his car was. Kyuhyun’s arm was wrapped around her waist, supporting her. It seemed like she was going to fall to the ground if he let go of her even for a second. He didn’t want that to happen. He didn’t want to let go.
