[As soon as he found out a friend was in need of some cheering up, John was ready, and he got hold of a worldhopper, picked up Eridan and got them both taken to some house in some world where they could watch awesome movies. [maybe it was a stupid idea, but he just trusted John on this one. he isn't feeling like dealing with interdimensional transportation right now. really he isn't feeling like dealing with much of anything, so he just waits and then goes and doesn't deal with it because it's too much hassle and falling in line with John is nice and easy especially because the little pink human is pretty nice and cheerful and it's kind of nice to just listen to him babble

[he's already humming along to the theme song, and he spends a minute scrambling around like a doofus until he finds the remote; once he's got it, he bounces over and sits next to Eridan on the couch.]

Yup! I don't think any of the other trolls have ever watched human movies, so oh jeez, I hope you like it. I really loved it when I watched it. It's pretty much a classic kid's movie and like, a vital part of any human childhood! It's magical, heheheh.

[he takes out the bunny from his bunnykind Strife Specibus and hugs it with one arm, sits back with the remote and gives Eridan an excited grin.]

[after idly investigating the food John brought, he brings out his own food - he brought some grubloaf in single-serving packets and soda and some other little items. he didn't have a lot of stuff on hand or anything, and he brought it all]

So I'm the first one ta wwatch this stuff wwith a human then? Huh.

[okay so that makes him actually crack a little smile, exposing a row of sharp teeth at John, peeking over at him as he pulls out some sort of stuffed thing]

And it's a kids movie? All about magic? Figures.

[he squirms back into the couch a bit more and brings one lanky leg up to fold against his chest, wrapping an arm around it and wriggling the foot still]

Yeah. Think I am.

[still, he's more looking at John curiously than anything]

[he looks over the food with a curious stare, but manages to contain his excitement and wonder for now because he can find out more about it during the movie while he's actually eating it! he squirms around to get comfortable himself.]

Awesome. [and he hits play.] Oh, uh, if you're confused about anything, you can just ask, okay? I will try my best to explain!

[he notices the kid staring at the food, and nudges one of the grubcakes over towrd him. it's kind of sweet and has icing on the edge, and it's a particular favourite of Eridan's, but hey, he'll share.

John's being awful nice, after all. enough that Eridan is getting the stirring uncomfortable red flush he recognizes building up somewhere in the bottom of his expanding and contracting bladder-based aquatic vascular system. and he ignores that because bad timing and playing your cards right and all that]

Kay. I guess it's got a lot a the human uh...social structure in it? I should be able to pick it up anywway, I'm a pretty smart guy.

[he leans forward and rests his chin on his knee thoughtfully, staring at the screen]

[he's not eating just yet, but rest assured as the movie continues he'll grab whatever's closest and shove it in his mouth without looking - which happens to be the grubcake, right now. for now, he just hugs his bunny.]

Yeah! There's not too much I don't think, and they sort of explain all the wizardy mudblood and pureblood stuff later. There's some family stuff, but it's not too hard?

[his eyes are glued to the screen because oh man Dumbledore is so cool and it's Professor McGonagall and yayyyyy. but he's bouncing a lot less and his excitement is kind of contained to his expressions for the moment.]

[he gets engrossed in the movie for a bit, just watching the screen with his teeth working at his lower lip, his fingers opening and closing a bit. really, this is pretty kiddie stuff, he can tell that much, but it's sorta captivating in its own way. he scoffs a bit at the magic, but he's mostly focused on the family stuff for now]

Is that wwhat human families're like?

[he looks over at John thoughtfully for a moment]

They seem kinda awwful.

[he sits upright suddenly and shakes his head.]

Oh, no, no way, man, haha. No, families are... Well, I mean, they're all different, but most families are... They're nice. [he has sort of a fond look, and he's realising now that his dad missing is a bigger deal to him than he thought and he doesn't even want to think about what Sollux said about him being dead.]

... Um, right, anyway! Yeah, Harry's parents were really nice, actually, they loved him a lot. His aunt and uncle and cousin are just... all huge jerks, pretty much. Heh, don't judge families by the Dursleys! They're not the norm or anything.

[well that got a reaction. Eridan shifts and glances over at him again, yellow eyes scanning over the human's face. he makes expressions pretty much the same way trolls do, so it isn't so hard to read him. Eridan isn't usually given to noticing other people's feelings, but there's something about the shock of being with an actual alien that's making him pay more attention than usual.

and John is kind of looking wistful or something. Eridan frowns a little]

So these replacement family humans are bein' awwful to him then, an this isn't normal. Guess that makes sense. For the story.

[after a pause, he reaches out and pushes his ring-adorned hand over against John's shoulder, just giving him a light shove. affectionately]

Uh-huh, that's right. When they took him in, they were supposed to love him and care for him like a real good family should, but they're douchebags and they treat him really badly. It's... sort of sad, actually! But things are going to get better, I promise.

[he's not particularly used to being comforted physically at all - normally it's shitty raps and bro codes or lines of purple text with hidden affection or radioactive green emoticons and enthusiastic pep talks - so that makes him smile and laugh a bit and he shoves back gently.]

Like a troll's lusus fuckin' off an' leavin' 'em alone to fend fer themselves, then. Or decided to eat 'em instead. Heh, yeah, got it. Pretty pathetic position for any wriggler to be in.

[when John pushes him back like that, it's almost unexpected. usually he was so busy he didn't bother much with touching Feferi - she didn't touch him either, they were usually just working together to hunt for lusus food, he was more used to being pressed against his lusus than another sentient being. he glances over at John and gets a ridiculous smile for a moment, before pushing back in turn, still not too hard. just teasing.

aliens are very warm, he decides]

Haha, yeah, I guess that's it.

[he just giggles and flops over onto his side when Eridan pushes him this time, eyes locked on the screen again while he watches Dudley be a bluh bluh huge jerk, but then they're going to the zoo and he gets excited again because oh he remembers the part coming up soon and it makes him laugh every time! but for now they're watching Harry talk to the poor snake.]

Dude, I always wished I could talk to animals, it seems like it would be sweet.

[he shakes his head at that, and looks over at John as the kid tips onto his side and lies on the couch watching the movie. after a few minutes of observation, he turns his attention back to the screen because that's what's holding John's attention. he watches the unnervingly fat human waddle across the screen and compares what that human looks like to what John looks like and comes up blank on how they're even the same species]

Oh really? I think Tavv has somethin' like that he can do. I dunno, I don't know him all that well other'n that him and Vvris have some kinda thing goin' on.

[after a moment, he blinks, and looks back over at Jon]

That big'un. Is he the same species as Harry or some wweird sub-species? He's an ugly big thing. You look more like Harry than he does. Wwell, like a more attractive version.

[the "more attractive" flies completely over his head, thankfully, and he sits up a bit to look over at Eridan.]

No, no, they're the same species. Uh, I think they're the same age, too! Humans can look really different. He's just fat, heheheh.

[and then more of Dudley being an asshole and shoving Harry onto the ground and suddenly John giggles a tiny bit at something that doesn't seem to have happened yet - but then right on cue, BAM the glass disappears and Dudley falls in and everyone is yelling and John bursts into laughter, and again at Harry's surprised little "... any time!" to the snake.]

[hey the 'more attractive' part wasn't even an attempt at hitting on him - he just thinks John has way better hair. he glances voer again though, when John sits up and peers at him, blinking large yellow eyes at him while he talks]

Fat huh? I'vve nevver seen a troll that fat before that made it outta the wwriggler stage, anywway. It'd be culled in a flash.

[he turns back to the screen at the bullying scene, a brow raising at the treatment, though John's giggling catches him off-guard, and he glances over at the boy - completely missing the snake scene]

Wwait, wwhat wwas so funny, I missed it?

[he crosses his arms poutily, his lower lip jutting out, looking rather offended at the movie]

[he laughs at Eridan's sulking and slides over a little closer to nudge him in a friendly way.]
