ugh.. cats!

Last night one of my cats almost burned our apartment down, thanks goodness for smoke detectors! At about 2:40 I heard this crash come from the kitchen, so I went and it looked like one of the cats (It was Luna, nosey bastard!) had tried to jump on the fridge but knocked a bunch of stuff down instead. So I picked up the stuff on the floor and went back to bed. About 20-30 minutes later all the smoke detectors started going off. WAKE UP!! So I ran back into the kitchen, it was full of smoke and smelled awful. One of the burners was glowing red and our George Foreman Indoor/Outdoor grill was sitting on the burner. I guess when the cat fell he had knocked it into the knob, which turned it on, and onto the burner. I hadn't even noticed it when I picked up the stuff off the floor. Well, I moved the grill and the bottom of it had started melting along w/ this clear plastic thing we put over plates in the mocrowave. So I threw a dish towel in the sink, then tried to pat the things that had been melting so they didn't catch on fire. This caused even more smoke. Meanwhile, Richard is fanning the smoke detector w/ a pillow and it's still going BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP, it's some time after 3:00 in the morning and I'm running around all groggy trying to open all the windows and doors- all w/ not pants on, mind you. Good lord.. I swear it took like 5 minutes for that stupid thing to go off, I was scared someone was going to call the fire dept. Then we were left w/ an apartment full of stinky smoke. We stayed up till sometime around 4:30 w/ candles lit and all the doors and windows open, but it still smells really bad in here. I'll post a picture of the bottom of the grill, it's really burnt. The plastic is all flaky.

I googled for the best way to get rid of the burnt plastic smell and the best solutions were to A) move or B) let it air out w/ the fan on. Too bad our lease isn't about to be up.

So, the moral of this story- Always make sure your stove hasn't been turned on when cats go crashing at night. (And maybe, sleep w/ pajama bottoms on.)

.... Anyone want a cat? :P
