So I saw something, somewhere, that talked about Marvel and the movies they're putting out and how it could possibly translate to more comic book sales that could help the "dying" comic book industry.
First off, I abhor the idea of reading comics off a tablet. I don't own a tablet, I will not own a tablet for the foreseeable future, and the big reason for that is DRM. I want to own the stuff I buy. I want to be able to interact with it whenever I want without having to be connected to the internet *cough*Diablo3/StarCraft/mp3s*cough* without needing a power source, etc. And I like books. I like paper in my hand.
Anyway, random rant over. And if I'm any indication that the movies have helped comic sales- then that theory has been definitely proven. I've probably spent upwards of $200 on Thor titles alone ever since I saw the movie last year. I've never even had any real interest in Marvel comics before then either.
So my latest haul I got World Eaters despite the poor reviews because I was curious how they'd bring Loki back (I mean I knew how but I wanted to see it play out). Matt Fraction, Marvel's apparent golden boy. Touted as the best thing since sliced bread.
Yeah. He sucked. A lot. I really hope he's better than that because nothing was on- not characterization, not pacing. I didn't know what the heck was going on half the time not because I didn't know who these people were, but because his pacing was that bad. It was disjointed and random and lackluster for the amount of really important things that happened. I know Fraction goes on to The Mighty Thor and I hope he gets his stride and this was just a learning curve or something. I've heard that The Mighty Thor is better than World Eaters, so I have hope.
I kinda fell in love with Pasqual Ferry's art though. He just has this unique style that I really liked and worked with the whole sci-fi element to Thor. So that was really nice.
I just want more Bendis. Or Gillen- OMG I love Gillen's run in Journey to Mystery. He does a completely fantastic job, and in Seige I adored Bendis' dialogue. The man knows how to do it right.
Right, I'll stop rambling now. I've wasted enough time.
