DOG DOG DOG (almost)
Jeff and I are going to get a dog!!
We want an Australian shepherd. Ideally, we want a female Aussie puppy. Aussie's are have lots of energy and are smart. I've read them described as smarter Labrador retrievers.
Our second choice is a lab, again female puppy.
We're okay with mixes. While the American Kennel Club book I'm reading strongly advocates for purebred animals, I know that mixes tend to have less health problems. Apparently Aussie/lab mixes are common. So is Aussie/German shepherd.
Jeff isn't too picky (unless he reads this today and decides he is picky?) about where we get the dog from. I want it to be from a shelter or rescue. I just don't trust breeders in our area. Maybe it's because I've only done online research so far. The sketchiest breeders tend to be more visible online, I think.
Since I'm focusing on dogs from shelters or rescues, finding a dog we want to meet is taking longer. Plus, a dear friend who will help us find a dog, E, is out of town. E runs a dog care business. She knows more about dogs than anyone I know!
I've been in a very happy place all week. Some of you know how long I've wanted a dog. Even my LJ posts point to that, as early as 2009, five years ago! I'm so excited it's finally coming to fruition!
