Tinker Tailor Solider Spy

Last night, Jeff and I enjoyed popcorn together and watched the recent spy thriller Tinker Tailor Solider Spy. It's been on my to watch list for months. The cast features hugely talented UK actors- Gary Oldman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth, John Hurt, Tom Hardy, and more. One of the sisters from Downton Abbey is in it too, a cameo role towards the middle end of the film. The film is based off a book (which is part of a series) by John Le Carré, aka David Cornwell.

I think my favorite performance was Cumberbatch's. He plays an MI6 intelligence agent tasked with helping Gary Oldman's character in his assignment to find the Soviet mole in what is often referred to as "the circus," basically British intelligence service (aka MI6). Since the mole is supposed to be place high in the leadership ranks of MI6, Oldman's task is pretty much a secret. Cumberbatch's character, Peter, has a lot at stake because he still has potentially a long career ahead of him. I think Peter has a leg up on all the other characters as a result of this. As an audience member, you have a clearer idea of what he stands to lose if things go sour. It's also more personal. Makes it easier to relate to him.

On a silly note, it was fun to watch Cumberbatch play a character with blond hair. :D It was pretty.

Plot wise, I was confused for much of the film. Still, I enjoyed watching it.
