Last weekend I went to San Francsco with friends and saw BOTH
saphywaphy and
ladyofthelog... but since I haven't processed my photos yet, we'll talk about Cabaret.
I'm in the stage band for work's summer musical!!
In Cabaret, there are two groups of musicians. One is the standard orchestra who plays the majority of songs. The other is a stage band comprised of 4-5 people. According to S, the wonderful orchestra conductor, there's a separate onstage entity because of mentions in the script. The band's music comes with 6 songs. BUT. The director, M, decided he wanted the band to play all the cabaret type numbers. Now, I have around a dozen songs in my music book.
The original stage band songs are moderately difficult. The challenge for me is range. I'm playing trombone. I haven't played the instrument for many, many years. While the learning curve has been pleasant, range takes time. The stage band songs only go as high as a G above middle C. I can hit this sporadically.
The new music though.... it's so high all the time!!! For reasons unknown to me, S gave me the 1st Trombone part. :/ The silver lining is that my new music is doubled by the regular orchestra 1st Trombone player. Him and the 2nd Trombone have been nice. My first rehearsal last week was rather mortifying. This past Monday's was better.
Cabaret runs from July 27-August 5. Performances are Friday/Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 2:30pm. I won't be at the Saturday, July 28 show- friend is getting married. If you want to see the musical, let me know!
