True Blood and Vampire Diairies

I tend to devour TV shows when I first discover them. Part of this is cause I don't have a real TV- we use my iMac mostly. Plus, I get excited over new fantastic things and want it all at once.

I started watching True Blood after the first season started. I loved it. There's lots of sex. Most of the shows I watched in high school didn't have lots of sex. My parents never had HBO/Showtime/etc. In college, my roommate Carla had the full show DVDs of Sex and the City. That was my first introduction to graphic sex on TV shows. So, by the time True Blood came around, I was a little more used to it. Still- WOAH.

Anyways, my favorite thing about the show was plot. Season 1 was engaging, surprising. I become a huge fan. I watched all of season 2 and 3 the following summers they aired.

Then season 4 came.

For me, the plot went off the deep end. It got too weird (though I thought the witch arc was interesting). I stopped watching sometime around episode 8.

A few months ago, I decided to pick up The Vampire Diaries. Besides Once Upon A Time, which I really like, there wasn't much going on in TV land for Mary.

One trait that True Blood and The Vampire Diaries have in common is the characters willingness to give into temptation... over and over again. I'm used to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer style of supernatural romance- lots of tension, starting to say yes then pulling back, that kind of thing. With both of these new vampire shows, the female heroines (Sookie and Elena, respectively) do experience inner turmoil and resistance in their vampire relationships. But it moves so much faster!

Like True Blood, I'm drawn to the plot in The Vampire Diaries. I want to see how the Stefen/Elena/Damon love triangle plays out. Sometimes the dialogue is ridiculous. Sometimes Damon smirks and does that weird eye thing too often to be charming 24/7. But I'm sticking with it... even buying episodes on iTunes because the early part of season 3 isn't available on Hulu or Netflix. Yeaaaa!
