Lenne absentmindedly traced a wave along between the lines of a fresh piece of paper. Then, returning to reality, she sighed and ripped the page out, crumpling it and throwing it over her shoulder. How to word this? she wondered, tucking the pen behind her ear so as not to waste any more paper. The breeze fluttered around her, cooling her down on the hot summer day and bathing her skin in light air-kisses.
When Shuyin entered the room hours later, when all the lights were out and only the candles remained to cast soft light on the surrounding darkness, his eye was caught by a small object fluttering in the breeze from the open window. Lighting another candle, he was able to distinguish it as a small piece of paper pinned down by a glass paperweight. His eyes scanned the short sentence written in Lenne’s distinctive handwriting before noticing the multitude of crumpled white sheets encircling the table.
Dear Diary, I need to tell Shuyin something important about my feelings for him. But I don’t know how to say it! How do I tell him that I… oh, how am I supposed to tell him when I can’t even admit it to you? Maybe I should tell him in a letter… there’s no way I can tell him face to face. I’m just not brave enough.
Shuyin carefully placed the notebook on the table, and reached for the first loose sheet.
Shuyin, you know how much time we've spent together recently...
I know you might not be expecting me to say this, but…
There’s something I have to tell you, but I’m not sure how…
All the pieces of paper said similar things, and bore evidence of emotional turmoil. Shuyin piled them up neatly by the notebook and picked up the last one.
Shuyin, I have some news for you. Something I have no idea how to tell you… oh, for goodness sake! I’ll just say it! But… oh, I don’t know… well I do know, but not how to tell you…
Shuyin smiled as he looked back at the first one he’d found. It said,
