“Damn spades,” Lirael muttered, glaring balefully at the two metal spades lying on the ground near her, reflecting the light of the midday sun into her eyes.

“How did you find out you were a Remembrancer?” Nick asked, trying to put off the time when they would have to stand up and resume digging.  It was a hot summer’s day and he and Lirael were lying in the shade under a tree near the pit where Orannis was being buried.

“Me and the Dog went exploring in the Glacier.  There was a really interesting hole in the wall -  what?” she asked, as Nick laughed.

“Well, ‘an interesting hole in the wall’ isn’t a phrase you hear that often,” he said.  Lirael rolled her eyes.

“We went down the passageway and ended up in the Rift, where all the dead Clayr are buried,” she said, then started laughing as she remembered what happened next.

“What was so funny?” Nick asked curiously.  Lirael shook her head.

“It wasn’t funny at the time, I found a door with my name on it and thought I had to dig my own grave because I was ill-bred.  It was just funny when I saw our spades,” she explained.  Nick raised his eyebrows.

“You thought you were ill-bred?  What happened to confident Lirael Goldenhand?” he asked, surprised.  He’d never known Lirael to be anything other than confident.

“I never spoke to anyone, because I thought I wasn’t good enough because I didn’t have the Sight, and the Sight is the most important thing to Clayr,” she explained.

“Oh, so then you found out you were a Remembrancer, and so after that you realised you’re a wonderful person?” Nick said.  Lirael blushed slightly and looked down.

“No, then the Voice came and they had to blindfold me because I didn’t have the Sight, so I was only a guest,” she said.  “Then I found out I was an aunt and so I had to act like one, I guess.”

“You’re a good actress, then,” Nick said.  “I wouldn’t have ever guessed that if you hadn’t told me.”  Lirael shrugged.

“It doesn’t matter, it’s in the past.  We should get back to digging now, bury Orannis so we never have to think of the past again,” she said, standing up and walking away past the spades.  Nick stood up quickly and reached out to catch her arm, to tell her not to run away from the past, but he tripped over a spade and landed on his face.

Lirael turned back and went to rush back to him to check he was alright, but tripped over the other spade and landed on top of Nick.

“Ouch,” she grumbled after a moment.  “That hurt.”  Nick nodded, absent-mindedly playing with her hair.

“Well, they do say that falling in love is hard on the knees,” he said wryly.  Lirael stared at him, searching his eyes to see if he meant it.

“It is,” she said after a moment.  Nick smiled at her, then looked up suddenly as a shadow fell over him.

“What the -“ Touchstone said in astonishment.  It wasn’t every day you saw your solitary sister in law sprawled on top of your son’s best friend, even if they were the same age.

“Erm - “ Lirael said, blushing red.

“Never mind, I don’t want to know,” Touchstone said.  Seeing Sabriel approaching, he muttered to himself, “Sabriel will, though.”  As he walked towards his wife, he tripped over the spade and landed with a thud at Sabriel’s feet.

Touchstone glared at Lirael and Nick as they started laughing.

“It’s not that funny!” he said crossly.

“They do say that falling in love is hard in the knees!” Lirael said between laughs, shaking with giggles as she saw the expression on Sabriel’s face.

“Well, try and stand up for long enough to do some more digging,” Sabriel said.  Lirael sent a half-hearted glare at the spades, but the digging tools really didn’t care and innocently lay on the ground, waiting for her to pick one up.

“Bloody spades,” she muttered as she emerged from the shade of the tree into the heat of the sun.
