Apparently, God/Santa doesn't read LJ, and didn't get my letter. Or I've disappointed in some way.

In either event there will be no Grad school for this lass in the Fall of '07.

Time for some serious reevaluation of things.
I'll get back to you all soon.

The defects Illich finds with schooling are numerous and undeniably
substantial, but the primary flaw he sees is that schooling’s power “to divide social reality has no boundaries: education becomes unworldly and the
world becomes noneducational.” (Illich, 24) In other words, the individual
loses the ability to acquire meaningful knowledge without formal
instruction. Society as a whole no longer sees the world as educational, and
thus, valuable knowledge can only be evaluated through schooling
certificates, which in actuality only measure the ability to attend and obey.
The mere completion of a process takes place of actual ability. Illich sees
this belief spreading throughout society. “Medical treatment is mistaken for
health care, social work for the improvement of community life, police
protection for safety, military poise for national security, the rat race for
productive work.” (Illich, 1) Expansions in education only promote these
problems. For Illich, the only solution is the elimination of schooling
altogether.

most interesting. it doesn't, however, dissuade me from wanting to participate in the university system. as you know, my hold on reality is tenuous at best to begin with and i do NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT. i am perfectly content to sail away on a cloud with my books and reimagine society as i wish it were and hope it will be. my desire to TEACH is partially my wanting to fix this problem with school that Illich illustrates -- by refocusing curriculum on studying the actual world, i.e. anthropology.

you see?
