Hey everybody, I know I'm supposed to be depressed during this day of singleness, but that whole feeling sorry for myself was never really for me. Let's face it guys, we don't need some drain on our wallet and soul that never puts out. And girls, let's face it, any guy you could get wouldn't be nearly as awesome as me, so what's the point? And couples.... happy valentine's day!! I hope you have a wonderful day together.
Anyway, here's a scratch draft of Apex.
[Nathan, Wes, and Mark are on top of a building, overlooking the entire campus. Wes is sitting and Mark is lying down beside him, while Nathan is in the forefront, standing up and looking outwardly.]
Wes Voiceover-There we are, at our Apex. That’s me, in the middle, and there’s Nathan standing and Mark sitting beside me. We come up to this place every month or so to look out at the world that we’re so strangely part of.
Nathan-I’m looking forward to this semester, guys. I think this is going to be a good one. [breathes deep] Ah, can’t you feel it?
Wes Voiceover-Nathan can sometimes be a little overly optimistic.
Mark-Nathan, this semester is going to just as lame, boring, and stressful as any other semester.
Wes Voiceover-Mark on the other hand, is never optimistic
Nathan-Always the voice of cynicism you are. But come on, we’re finally living together, we’re taking classes that are actually interesting. We’ll meet all sorts of interesting new people.
Mark-Why would we want to meet new people?
Nathan-Huh?
Mark-I mean, what’s so great about meeting new people? I know all the people I need to know.
Nathan-I don’t understand. New people make things more interesting.
[Mark responds as Wes Voiceovers]-Mark and Nathan seem to have conversations like this rather frequently. The voice of naïve idealism verse the voice of abject pessimism. I usually try to stay out of it.
Nathan-Well, what do you think Wes?
Wes Voiceover-On the rare occasions that they ask my opinion about these pressing matters, I respond pretty much the same way each time.
Wes-I don’t really care.
Nathan-Man you two are depressing. [sits down with the other two]
Nathan-But come on, think of the possibilities of this semester. Maybe you’ll meet a girl.
Mark-Oh just what I need, less time and a thinner wallet.
Nathan-Now you’re just lying to yourself. I’m sure you want one of those lady-friends of yours to be your girlfriend.
Mark-[Grimaces at Nathan for bringing that up] No, not really.
Nathan-Suit yourself. Maybe I’ll find a nice lady for myself.
Mark-I’m sure you will.
Nathan-I don’t mean just a girl, I mean like a real girl. Like a female Pinocchio.
Mark-[pauses to make sure he heard right] You mean not like that.
Nathan-Yea, whatever. What about you, Wes? Any ladies on the horizon?
Wes-[thinks for a second] I don’t really care.
Nathan-Fine, well I’m looking forward to this semester.
Mark-Hey, I just don’t want to set myself up for disappointment.
Wes-I’m with Mark on this one.
Nathan-[stutters and can’t think of a response] Whatever.
