Intelligent Design Is Bullshit

Sep 08, 2006 08:13

So-called "Intelligent Design," or "ID," is the proposition of "irreducible complexity" in nature, which stipulates that life on Earth is too fundamentally complicated to have come about by random chance or natural process (i.e. evolution, chiefly). Numerous examples are cited in its defense, the most popular being the intricate formation of the eye. So complex is the functional development of the eye, say proponents of ID, that there must have been an intelligent designer.

While most free-thinking individuals immediately perceive the lurking shadow of fundamentalist religious belief within ID and its far-flung "theories," there are many who either lack the skeptical nature to challenge it, or who align themselves with those underlying beliefs and see ID as the spear that will gut evolution once and for all.

I am here to say openly, and without reservation, that Intelligent Design is fucking bullshit, and if any of you out there reading this find even a grain of truth in its preposterous suppositions, you can all leave right now and never come back, for you are fools, all of you.

For a very steady-handed debate regarding Intelligent Design as an idea, read the Intelligent Design discussion page for the article regarding same on Wikipedia. The discussion archives are particularly satisfying to read because, while they do sometimes delve into some discussion of the validity of the topic as a theory, they are primarily concerned with resolving ambiguity in its definition and they are consciously polite about it (in concordance with Wikipedia rules).
