With “Future” set as the theme, this year’s 24 hr Television has finally started. This is a short-term series in which with Arashi, who is appointed as the Main Personality for the 3rd time, we will communicate to the readers about the ideas and thoughts behind the TV program. In the first volume, we discuss about the appeal of the Special Drama.
"It was quite early, but around the time that it was decided Arashi will be the Main Personality of “24hr Television”, it was also decided that I would do the Special Drama. This time, I had the opportunity to discuss about the content, and it had been changed several times, but I think the present form is the best way to discuss about “human”. (T/N: being human, having human-like qualities)
“Being a disabled person, you can’t move the lower part of your body, your life has changed, it’s hard, but you're trying your best”…..I will say this without fearing a misunderstanding, but I think it’s a normal thing to do. Because, we wouldn’t be able to keep on living if we didn’t. That’s why people have families, friends, loved ones, of course maybe they have people they hate too, around them.
Rather than trying to show that “normalcy” poignantly, I discussed it [with the staff], thinking if we could make it cruder, like “I want to be a good person but I can’t” kind of drama. Perhaps people who always enjoy the “24 hr TV” Drama every year will feel a little bit uncomfortable with this work, but I think it’s a very good drama.
I hardly had the chance to state my opinion in the works I appeared in, because people who say too much are disliked, and I want to be liked after all (laugh). Nevertheless, I said it. I’m not saying that I bear the responsibility [to do it], but I believe there’s some reason behind why I want to do it. I thought, first, I have to find out what it is.
Watching the Special Drama every year makes us feel some sort of message about what it wants to convey to us in that particular year, or the reason why “24 hr TV” is held every year, and continuously being held. Up until now, there were lots of [24 hr TV special] drama whose contents make us feel like, as long as there are people who are doing their best and live positively even it’s hard, it would be nice if we had at least one day when we think about those people. I have no intention to destroy something that has been done up until now, but I thought, if possible, I wanted to do something different.
About the role, I can only tell you about the brief overview, but I think Yasuyuki is a very good boy. This hair --actually it was my idea-- is also some sort of a symbol. He’s not simply a “delinquent boy”, and I wasn’t certain, but I thought as I got on the wheelchair….. “will you get out of my way?”
More than the hair color I had until now, I thought that people would get out of my way if it was in this color…..
But people who’d seen me [with this hair color] asked, “What kind of work are you doing now?” (laugh). I felt strongly that even if I had the time in private I’m not at the age when blonde hair is allowed, so I will make it black again once the drama shooting is over (laugh).
STORY
The story pictures a boy named Yasuyuki, who led a troubled life and damaged his bone marrow in a trouble with delinquents so that he had no choice but to live on a wheelchair. He once attempted to commit suicide but through various happenings and encounters, he took the first step to become a counselor.
