Forgive me, Father. It has been 8 years since my last post.
Hello! I'm in grad school now. I decided to take the plunge after working nearly 10 years at a music store and 7 years as an a cappella director. I wanted to do mOrE with my life and needed a change of environment. So, I auditioned for jazz studies programs at both North Texas and Northern Colorado. What's with all these schools being north? Is there something jazzy about the north? We know for a fact that jazz started in the south. What the heck is going on here? Anyway, I got into both schools (was waitlisted at TX) and ended up moving to Colorado! Holy cow I did it! I just finished my first year and I'm proud to say that I earned a 4.0 GPA for both semesters. Next year, I'm excited to have been offered a TA position in vocal jazz. Hopefully it goes well.
I've been writing a lot more and doing some remote recordings with my friends Amanda and Jeremy (mostly Amanda). She has a super great voice that works for anything that I write. Anything she sends back to me sounds completely professional and perfect. I am glad to have met these friends. I was very nervous about not connecting with anyone, yet I managed to find a stable social network. Amanda and I have been watching Sense8 with her boyfriend, Nick. It's fun to revisit that show, and I realized I haven't actually seen the entire story. I've also been going frisbee golfing and sometimes playing ultimate frisbee with other Colorado friends. Though, last time I tried to play ultimate, my legs hurt so badly that I could't even play one point. I had to sit out. I don't know what happened. I had gone frolfing that morning and was fine. Maybe it was from all the diving I did the previous week during ultimate frisbee.
In a couple days, I'm going to start traveling back home. I'm making a stop in South Dakota to visit a friend, and then I'll have to drive through the width of MN on the way back to WI. I'm slightly nervous about the happenings in Minneapolis right now. Hopefully things will be fine as I traverse the highway.
Quarantine has made it really hard for me to get work done at my apartment. My upstairs neighbors are super loud and annoying. They have parties almost every Friday. One Friday, I had to build a "soundproof" fort in my closet to try to block out the sound. This involved taking a cardboard box and putting pillows and blankets all around it. Then I laid out blankets so my head was in the box and my body was outside on the blankets. I had earplugs in, too, but I could STILL hear the party. I've complained three times to the management via email but haven't gotten any response about it. Very frustrating. I'm looking forward to going to home to have the silence I need to sleep normally. Hopefully I'll be safe at home from any pandemics that are going around. I'm already kind of a socially distant person.
That's all for now. Maybe I should do this more often now that I've recovered my password from delving into my AOL email. Bleh.
