Utena has incest, pedophilia, more incest, homosexuality, incest, discourse on fairytale constructs such as princes and princesses and whether a girl can fulfill the role of 'prince', and... more incest! Actually to be fair that might be one incest too many. ANYWAY I LIKE IT. It's surreal (as in a conscious artistic choice, not just 'wow this is so disjointed I can't follow what's happening'), so it's just full of all this compelling imagery and metaphor. I think it's the sort of thing you could write reams and reams about.

SO IT'S REALLY MY KIND OF SERIES YAY.

The best part is, it's absolutely 100% not sensationalised. It's just there, it just is, it's part of the story and the characters and who they are, and it doesn't ever feel like a gimmick so much as a genuine exploration. And hahah, man, I had no idea about any of this when I first watched, so I was all 'ahahah, oh anime, for a minute there I thought they were implying -this-!'. AND THEN.

But yeah, as a series it manages to remain offbeat and lighthearted. Just, you know, it'll punch you occasionally. >:| just like good anime should. But yeah, it's got great drama but it's never melodramatic, it's got ridiculous humour but the characters never stop being real and engaging. I REALLY LIKE UTENA A LOT.

I LOVE UTENA AS WELL, and in fact I am the one who recc'ed it to Gargie there in the first place. I also think you'd really like it too, and she described the feel of it very well.
