Have you ever betrayed someone's confidence? Has anyone ever betrayed you?
Write a ficlet on the theme of betrayal.
This takes place during "Safe" when River/Jayne/Simon are seated waiting to be transferred while at the hospital in Ariel.
His heart is racing. Pounding. Thudding. It's all I can hear. The thud beneath his chest, and the whispers. They're there.
Hidden beneath the snow. It falls down slowly covering the sill of the window. Look outside as the world is hidden. All the bad things are gone now. Just whiteness. Cleans it all up. Makes the world more perfect. Makes things new again.
Shiny wrappings and pine needles. No tree. Can't afford it.
Not even at Christmas time.
He wants to sit beside her. She's sick. Needs help.
Not all of her is there. Some of it they took away.
Too much space taken up. Elbow pushes against me. Not enough room. They're coming for them and there won't be enough room for all the blood. It spills out of them, and leaks over their skin. Never enough room.
Not in the girl. All the space. They filled it up. Filled it up and broke her down. Down.
Down the stairs his feet land hard. Father yells. Don't be that loud. Can't wake mother. Needs her sleep. He doesn't understand. Just a boy. Just a boy who made a mistake.
Mistakes are made. A call placed out. Bring them in. Easy money. Can't be greedy.
Don't peek. Fingers curl around the closet door. Just a tiny look, to see what is there. Won't never know. Can't ever know he even thought it.
I hear it. The creak of the hinge. I see it. The look of shock as it's all gone away.
No handsome reward for the man who is just a boy. File along the wall just like the others. Common criminals with not so common files.
Worth the risk just to look. Worth the strike-down. Worth the pay-off to turn on the Captain.
Turn out the lights. He's coming. Coming for all the good little boys and girls. Those that keep their promises. Those that keep others safe. For those that don't peek when it isn't right.
No one is coming for me. They come again and again. Over and over. Landing on rooftops and climbing down chimneys. They'll find their plate of cookies and glass of milk. Spilled over. Broken with crumbs.
They took all the presents away. None left behind. Just a sad little boy. Gave you coal. Dark and black. Small and hard.
Life is hard. Make your choices. Make them wrong.
It's all wrong. Can't see the light, all I see is the dark. But the light is coming, and soon I'll be free.
Soon I can dance in the snow. In the newly made perfect world.
Just need to see about a boy and his mistakes.
