So, after about 10 years of speculation and North Korea telling the rest of the world "....what nuclear bomb...?",
Kim Jong Il has gone from being the ass of every American joke to being the current number one threat to global nuclear stability and international relations when North Korea was discovered to have conducted an
underground nuclear test, which violated dozens of treaties set up by the UN in an attempt to maintain an (sadly, unstable) balance between North Korea, South Korea, Japan and the United States. China, who is N. Korea's main ally and economic backer has condemned Kim Jong Il's actions and declared that they will be forced to take action and be part of a world-wide sanction to be put on N. Korea. (For those of you that dont know China/N.Korea history, this is like your best friend saying "uh...yo.... i dunno what he was doing, i wasnt there, im not a part of it, i think he fucked up too." when you get caught doing something you werent supposed to.)
The U.S has said that it is not so much the fear that N.Korea will make a nuclear strike against another country that is causing all of the upheaveal, but moreso that N.Korea has never made a weapon that they havent sold to neighbouring countries such as Syria, Iran, etc. If they begin to build more nuclear weapons, they could seriously unbalance the world's already unstable nuclear treaties.
This also marks what will very likely be the begining of an arms race between China, Japan and the ever-reluctant South Korea to create weapons to simply keep up with other countries, especially those "undeclared" nuclear powers like Iran, N. Korea and Israel.
In other news, tragically,
Anna Politkovskaya -- a Russian journalist whom i greatly admired (especially for her coverage and criticism of the
Chechnya war and gross human rights violations) was
found gunned down in the elevator of her apartment building on Saturday, October 7th just days before the release of her latest article about torture and kidnappings in Chechnya based on witness accounts and photos of tortured bodies. Its currently unclear as to who ordered the contract-style killing, but President Vladimir Putin and Chechen prime minister Ramzan Kadyrov are suspects, as they were both often denounced in Politkovskaya's articles.
Though journalist murders have become very common in Russia (as its rated #3 in the world's deadliest places for journalists) and killers are rarely caught, the public outcry has been heard far and wide across the globe. Leaders of groups and government have denounced her murder and have vowed to take action and find the killers, and the Russian newspaper that Politkovskaya wrote for, Novaya Gazeta has offered a bounty of $1.25 million to whoever helps bring the killers to justice. She was only 48 years old.
And, finally... South Dakota continues to be
backward-thinking-hick-motherfuckers that wont be satisfied until they reverse supreme court case Roe vs. Wade. They are set to vote on outlawing abortion, if the vote passes, it will be brought to the supreme court.
Thanks South Dakota, because of you, there will be a greater need for coat-hangers and adoption agencies will soon have a big baby boom.
Stupid bastards.
