I am annoyed by the fact that sci-fi fans still feel a need to apologize or something for...being fans. Dudes. Science Fiction boasts some of the most kick-ass writers (Asimov, LeGuin, Heinlein, Bradbury, Philip K. Dick....), iconic characters (Spock? Darth Vader? Yes?), and influential plots, worlds, and storylines (Blade Runner, Dune, The Left Hand of Darkness, I, Robot, etc. etc...) ever to emerge from the international cultural matrix. Yet I constantly see people apologizing for recommending science fiction/sci-fi flicks or shows or books and that just bugs me.

Not all sci-fi fans dance around the house in stormtrooper undies or make out with their life-size cardboard cutout of Fox Mulder. Or Dana Scully, for that matter. But y'know what? Even if they do, it doesn't mean an entire genre should be looked at askance or consistently apologized for by its own fans, for being somehow 'fringier' or whatever than whatever latest reality show garbage network execs are bombarding us with these days.

Fans! Quit apologizing for liking this stuff! I'll let you in on a little secret: a lot of it's actually really, really good.
