Murdoch Mysteries

And sorry folks I can't get this entry to lj-cut properly!

I am going to go with Murdoch Mysteries.

He's a Victorian detective decades ahead of his time, she's a female pathologist in a profession dominated by men and together they fight crime! Obviously. Because it's their job.

Murdoch Mysteries is kind of like Sherlock Holmes would be if Sherlock Holmes was a Catholic detective who failed at disguises and lying. And worked for the police. In Canada. Okay so actually the series only similarity with Sherlock Holmes is the fact it's set in the Victorian period and the use of forensic science to solve crime. It's actually based on a series books of the same name.

The title character is Detective William Murdoch who is logical and has these new fangled methods that get the job done. He has an on/off (- note PTB please be on) relationship with Dr Julia Ogden, the local pathologist (They make a good couple. They are so geeky and awkward and adorable together! /shipper's bias).

His superior is Inspector Thomas Brackenreid who indulges Murdoch as even if he doesn't understand the methods he knows they get results. And Murdoch is ably assisted by Constable George Crabtree (who actually does most of the legwork and in the later seasons has a most excellent rapport with Constable Henry Higgins).

It's a fun ensemble series with crime! And Victorian-ness (that's so a word). Although supposedly a straight drama (and some of the story lines can be quite dark dealing with prostitution, serial killers, homosexuality, suicide and abortion among others) it has nice little moments of humour. It also has cameos from random figures from history - Arthur Conan-Doyle shows up a couple of times as do Nicolae Tesler and Houdini among others.

It's like CSI if CSI had to invent things first.

And it's Canadian. So far there have been 3 seasons of 13 episodes each with a fourth in production. Season 1 is probably the straightest drama (season 2's finale had airships and season 3 had erm...microwave ray guns) but they are all good. Honestly.

The first two seasons are out on DVD and are excellent quality.

As a side note originally the novels were adapted for TV as small telenovella feature length shows. These had a totally different cast and alas lacked Yannick Bisson and his eyelashes of mascara doom.
