The Mountie and the Green Dragon - Pumpkin Carving
Outside a cave a small green dragon jumped up and down, trying to see if he could see his father coming back. Beside him stood a human who was keeping a careful eye on the small green dragon. And next to him were a wolf and a rabbit, also on the lookout for the return of the other member of the family.
“Dad, when is Dad going to be back with the pumpkin?” the small green dragon asked, sitting on the ground and looking up at his father.
Fraser looked down at his impatient son. “He shouldn't be long, Robert. I just hope Ray was able to find one it is rather early.”
Robert resumed his lookout. “I can't wait to carve a pumpkin.”
Diefenbaker barked.
“See Dief and Lester can't wait either,” Robert said.
“Robert, be careful with that knife,” Fraser said, keeping an eye on the blade his son held as he occasionally jumped up and down.
“I need it to the carve the pumpkin,” Robert relied.
“I know, but you need to be careful,” Fraser said.
Robert stopped his jumping and down and and carefully looked at the knife he held in his claws. “Did you give Dad this knife?”
“Yes, I did.”
“Cool,” Robert paused. “It's a good knife.”
“It is. Your grandfather gave it to me when I graduated the academy.”
Robert looked at the knife again. “And you gave it to Dad?”
Fraser nodded.
“You must really love him.”
“I do,” Fraser reassured him.
Before they could say anything else a large green dragon appeared holding a large round orange object. He landed just a short distance. “Benny, I've got the pumpkin thing,” he called.
Robert immediately leapt up and ran toward it. “Yay!”
As soon as he got close enough Ray called out his own warning. “Hey, Robert, be careful...”
“With the knife. I know, I know. Dad told me,” Robert said as he admired the gift his father had brought back.
Diefenbaker and Lester seemed excited to see it as they sniffed it, Dief even venturing a lick.
“You should listen to your Dad.”
Robert glanced at Ray. “I do. Can we carve the pumpkin yet?”
Ray picked it up and carried it toward the cave. “I just got here. Let me get the thing inside.”
“Where did you get it from, Ray?” Fraser asked, joining his family as they carried the pumpkin inside.
“Some human farmer. I didn't have enough money so I helped him fix the roof of his house,” Ray replied.
“That was very generous of you, Ray” Fraser said.
Ray put the pumpkin onto the cave floor. “Yeah, well, our son wanted a pumpkin so I got him a pumpkin.”
Fraser patted his shoulder. “You're a good father, Ray.”
Ray and Fraser walked a little away form the pumpkin. “Yeah, well, I wasn't the one who gave him the idea of carving pumpkins. I know humans do it for Halloween but that's not for another month.”
“Robert seemed eager, He;s only young, Ray,” Fraser replied.
“Yeah, and dangerous with that knife.” Ray watched Robert carefully,
“Practice makes perfect.”
“I just hope he doesn't slice some scales off before he gets perfect,” Ray said as Robert was experimentally pushing the knife into the pumpkin, oblivious to his parents' conversation.
“He'll be fine, Ray. Human children carve pumpkins at his age.”
“He's a dragon. We don't carve pumpkins,” Ray protested.
“You do, Ray.”
“Okay I do, but I live with a human.”
“So does Robert.”
Ray sighed. “You know you're the one who worries, why am I worried?”
Fraser stroked Ray's shoulder. “I don;t know, Ray. Perhaps because you don't have the same experiences as Robert.”
“Yeah, he's lucky he gets one human parent and one dragon parent. He gets to breathe fire and carve pumpkins.”
Fraser smiled. “Yes he does.”
Ray leaned down and they shared a kiss. It was a brief one as their son's shouting disturbed them.
“Dad! Dad! Can we carve the pumpkin now?”
Ray gave Fraser a nuzzle. “Yes, Robert, we're coming.”
They came back to the pumpkin that Robert was currently prodding and poking.
“So what do we do first, Dad?”
“First of all we need to cut the top off, then we scoop out the inside,” Fraser explained.
“Do you want to cut the top off?” Robert asked, offering Fraser the knife.
Fraser took it, “I think it would be a good idea.”
“What are we using for scooping, Benny?” Ray asked.
“There should be some spoons on the side.”
Ray went over and managed to find three spoons, one dragon sized, one human sized and one small dragon sized. He also grabbed a bowl to put the scooped bits into. He carried them back to the pumpkin.
Fraser had successfully sliced the top off, neat as always. “Now we need to scoop the inside out.”
Ray handed the spoons around and they got to work.
Robert giggled. “Ewww this stuff is gooey.”
“Put it in the bowl so we don;t waste it,” Fraser instructed.
“Your Dad is going to make pumpkin pie,” Ray said.
“Well, I'm going to try, Ray.”
“Yay.”
In no time at all they had scooped the insides out. Dief and Lester ate some of the scooped out pumpkin from the bowl before Ray wisely placed it out of their each. Next Fraser told Robert how to a face into the pumpkin. Ray watched as slowly the face began to take shape. Dief and Lester ate the parts they cut out.
Finally it was finished and they stood back to admire their work.
“What do you think, Ray?”
“It looks good. You did a great job.”
“We did?” Robert asked, sounding unsure.
Ray smiled and patted his son's head. “Oh yeah. But you know this isn't going to last until Halloween, right?”
Robert's face fell. “It isn't?”
“No, Robert.”
“You'll just have to do another one on Halloween,” Ray said.
“We can do it again?” Robert asked, smiling broadly.
“Do you think you;re going to be able to get another pumpkin, Ray?”
“Yeah, that farmer's barn roof needed fixing.”
“Can I come with you next time, Dad?”
“Yeah you can,” Ray agreed. “Now are you going to play with Dief and Lester?”
Robert nodded and nudged the pumpkin out to the cave entrance, It took a lto of effort to push it. “We're going to play with the pumpkin.”
“Be careful,” Fraser said.
“So you;re back to worrying, Benny?”
“I never really stopped,” Fraser admitted. “You'd go back to the farmer to get Robert another pumpkin?”
“Yeah, it makes him happy. It makes you happy.”
“Me?”
“You were smiling when you carved that pumpkin.”
Fraser was smiling as he replied. “I did enjoy it, Ray.”
“See. And if it makes you happy too then it's worth it.”
“Yes, Ray.”
They shared another kiss, this time one uninterrupted as their son was busy playing outside, even if they could hear Dief barking. Ray hugged Fraser and they shared another kiss. .
“I should go and make the pumpkin pie,” Fraser said, still relaxed in Ray's arms.
“Yeah, they're going to be hungry when they've finished playing with that thing.”
“I would think so.”
“Do you want some help?”
Fraser nodded. “I'd appreciate that, Ray.”
As they made the pie they saw how happy Robert was. Strange how such a simply thing seemed to make him happy, Ray decided that maybe they would have to make pumpkin a more regular event. Then again did humans carve any other vegetables? Perhaps next time he was in town Fraser could look for a very big carrot.
