Ray was watching his beaver closely. He usually watched them closely anyway, a fact which sometimes led to some odd looks when Welsh wasn't aware Ray was not staring at his sandwich, but at the beaver that was sniffing said sandwich. Penny seemed to have caught on that it could do all sorts of things and, other than Ray, nobody would ever know. Ray was sure his beaver was teasing him.
He was watching Penny take a nibble out of Huey's doughnut (although that was odd in itself, why was a beaver nibbling a doughnut?) when he saw another small furry creature. Ray blinked to make sure he wasn't seeing things. Was that? A hamster? A hamster looking up at his beaver, that was what it looked like. Had a hamster escaped from somewhere?
Penny then gently picked off a bit from Huey's doughnut and handed it to the small hamster creature. Ray was even more puzzled now. Was it even a real hamster? He got up and walked over to see if he could find out. Penny, though, was able to sense him coming and both Penny and the hamster climbed off the chair they were perching on and ran, well, waddled off.
“Hungry, Vecchio?” Huey asked.
Ray looked down at the half eaten doughnut and sighed. No-one would ever believe a spirit beaver did it. Said beaver had cost him twenty dollars that week already. What was a few more?
As a result of Penny's behaviour at the station Ray refused to talk to his beaver on the way home. Fraser, though, had to know the reason why.
“Ray?”
“Yeah, Benny?” Ray replied, trying to relax a little as they drove along.
“Penny seems a bit upset,” Fraser noted.
Amik was cuddling close to Penny and the two were giving a mix of angry and pleading looks to Ray via the mirror. Ray was trying to ignore them. Why should he feel guilty?
“It ate Huey's doughnut,” Ray said.
“Ah.”
“Huey thinks I eat like a hamster,” Ray added. “I wasn't the one feeding one.”
Fraser frowned. “What hamster, Ray?”
“The hamster Penny was feeding,” Ray replied.
Fraser was looking around. “I can't see a hamster, Ray.”
Ray glanced around the Riv but he couldn't see one either. Penny and Amik were on their own in the back with Dief, looking innocent. “Have you guys seen it?” Ray asked.
The beavers shook their heads.
“I swear there was a hamster, Benny,” Ray said.
“I believe you, Ray,” Fraser said, sincerely. “Perhaps when you see it again you can point it out.”
“Yeah,” Ray replied. He was sure the beavers were hiding something and Dief too. He would wait until he saw the hamster again, then they'd see.
Sadly, Ray didn't get the chance to prove the existence of the small furry creature until after dinner. Oddly, Dief had left some of his pizza. The beavers had eaten theirs and didn't seem in the least bit motivated to finish off Dief's when Penny sneaked over to the closet with a piece.
“Benny, look at Penny, where is it taking that pizza?” Ray asked, following his beaver's progress.
Fraser came closer to watch. As they did so they saw a small hamster type creature step out of the closet and start nibbling on the pizza Penny was offering.
“There you see,” Ray said, trying not to to be too loud. “I told you there was a hamster.”
“It's not a hamster. It's a lemming, Ray,” Fraser explained.
A pizza loving lemming? All Ray knew about Lemmings was that they liked to jump off cliffs. “What are they doing with a lemming? Why have they been feeding it?”
“I would imagine because the lemming is Dief's spirit animal.”
Ray looked a Dief who was trying to act nonchalantly as Amik was cleaning up the box. “The wolf has a spirit animal?”
“Yes, Ray.”
“How can a wolf have a spirit animal?” Ray asked. He could get why humans had them but animals with spirit animals?
“I'm not really sure but he does.”
“And it's a lemming?”
“Yes, perhaps because the wolf as a predator is balanced by the prey spirit of a lemming,” Fraser mused.
The lemming had finished its pizza and both it and Penny headed back to where Amik and Dief were sitting. Ray took a good look at it.
“It still looks a hamster,” he noted.
Dief whined.
“Sorry, Dief,” Ray said, There weren't many lemmings running around Chicago. Which made Ray think. “It's not going to leap out of the window is it?” Ray asked.
“Why would it do that, Ray?” Fraser asked.
The lemming snuggled up to Dief. Penny patted it.
“That's what lemmings do, right? They jump off cliffs,” Ray said.
“Ray, Ray, Ray. The apartment isn't a cliff and the lemming is a spirit lemming. In the wild, the cycle of jumping off a cliff only occurs every few years when the population is too great for the resources available. Scientists find the actual idea fascinating and have researched...”
“Okay, it's not going to jump. Good.” Ray was relieved. Now all he had to do was get used to a lemming. “Why can we see it anyway?”
Amik was writing on its chalkboard. Fraser read out loud what it said. “Diefenbaker's lemming was lonely and it needed some friends.”
Amik wrote another message and again Fraser read it out. “As we can see the lemming , so our humans can.”
Ray groaned. “That's it?”
“Yes, Ray, as the beavers can see it we're able to.”
Penny was now writing on its chalkboard and this time Ray read out loud what it said. "It's name is...” Ray paused. “Oh,come on. It can't be called that!”
Fraser read it himself. “John.”
“You cannot have a lemming called John,” Ray protested. It didn't even look like a John.
Dief barked.
“Fine, it's your lemming.”
Diefenbaker seemed pleased and licked his lemming.
“Shouldn't he want to eat that lemming?” Ray asked. The lemming, John, didn't seem to mind being covered in wolf slobber.
“Well, he's not covered in chocolate,” Fraser pointed out.
Ray had to concede that point. “Okay, so where is the lemming going to live?”
Penny nudge Ray's leg and pointed at the lodge. “With you?”
Penny and Amik both nodded.
“There is plenty of room in the lodge,” Fraser said. “And I'm sure John won't take up much space.”
Ray sighed. John...what kind of a lemming name was that? At least Penny and Amik's names made sense for beavers. He didn't have any time to worry about beavers called John however as Diefenbaker picked up the lemming..in his mouth.
“Benny! Dief's eating his lemming!” Ray said, shocked.
“He's not eating John, Ray, look.”
Sure enough,Diefenbaker carried the lemming to the lodge where he gently released it. The beavers each gave the lemming a pat and the lemming went into the lodge with them following. Ray was staring after them.
“Why did they do that?””
“Perhaps John wanted to be carried,” Fraser suggested.
“He could have just gone on Dief's back,” Ray pointed out.
“Perhaps his mouth was warmer.”
Diefenbaker barked.
“Well, if they don't mind...” Fraser replied.
There was another bark.
“All right then. I'm sure Ray and I will appreciate the privacy,” Fraser said. Ray recognised the tone.
“Where is he going?” he asked.
He didn't have to wait long for his answer as Diefenbaker followed the beavers into the lodge.
“Can they all fit in there?” Ray asked.
“It is an imaginary lodge, Ray,” Fraser replied.
“Yeah, right. Are they going to stay in there?”
“Diefenbaker did mentioned they were going to play cards.”
Ray wasn't even going to ask how they could play cards. “Okay, so how about we go out for a walk?” Ray suggested. “A nice, romantic walk,” he added.
“That sounds a very good idea, Ray.” Fraser agreed.
Ray got up and put his coat on. Fraser was quickly ready to go. Ray hoped that two spirit beavers, a spirit lemming and a wolf wouldn't get up to too much. He'd just about had enough weird spirit animal related stuff for one night. However, as they left the apartment Ray could have sworn he heard the sounds of rustling chip bags and beer cans. Yes, it would have to be a very long walk indeed.
