Just Another Egg Story

Ray wasn't entirely why he was on the floor, sitting on a couple of guys he appeared to have landed on but Fraser seemed pleased.

“Perfect timing, Ray.”

Ray got up and dusted himself down. “It was not perfect timing, it was luck,” he said as Huey and a group of uniforms appeared to haul the guys up.

“Either way saving these eggs is very important.”

Ray noticed Fraser was clutching a box. He peered inside. “Penguin eggs?” He vaguely remembered them tracking said eggs earlier.

“Ray, penguins are an endangered species.”

“They are not.”

“Global arming s melting the Antarctic ice caps where they have traditionally laid their eggs and raised their young.”

“Okay, so we saved a few more Pingus.”

“Pingu?”

Ray shrugged. “My niece watches it, some penguin that talks gibberish.”

“Sounds interesting.”

“It's not interesting it's made of plasticine,” Ray said. Last thing he wanted to do was end up with another Pingu addict. His niece already watched it for hours at a time.

“Ah. We should get these eggs back to the incubator.”

They set off to the penguin enclosure.

“Who steals penguin eggs anyway?”

“Apparently the men that were arrested,” Fraser replied, clutching the box tightly.

“So, we give the zoo guys the eggs back, then what?”

“Well there's a diner very close to here, Ray.”

Ray sighed. “Our date at the zoo didn't work out did it?”

“It was good we were here.”

“Yeah, but what did we get out of it?” Ray asked. “I don't even get the arrest, Huey does.” Despite the fact Ray had...landed on the guys. Huey would be the one booking them in so he'd get the credit, meanwhile Ray was delivering penguin eggs.

“I'm sure there'll be something for us, Ray,” Fraser replied.

Several months later Ray found himself once again at the zoo.

“Benny, why are we at the zoo again?” Ray asked. It had been Fraser's idea to come here.

“There's something you need to see, Ray.”

Ray followed him. “What? We're going to see penguins?” Ray asked, noticing the direction they were headed.

“Yes, Ray.”

When they reached the penguin enclosure Fraser pointed to a small sign. “Look.”

It was a small information. Ray read it out loud. “Ray and Benton?” he looked at Fraser and continued to read. “Two of our newest chicks are named Ray and Benton after the police officer and Mountie who helped rescue them, and the other eggs, which were stolen a few weeks before the chicks hatched. We have every hope that Ray and Benton will grow up to be part of our breeding programme and one day have chicks of their own together.” Ray stopped reading and paused. “How can two guys have chicks?”

Fraser blushed. “Ray is a girl, Ray.”

Ray's eyes widened. “They gave my name to a girl penguin?”

“They weren't sure she was a girl until last week. A DNA test is the only way to be sure,” Fraser explained.

“So, my penguin and your penguin are going to be a couple?”

“They aren't related, the eggs were a mixed set in order to create a new breeding colony.”

“And they're going to pair up Ray and Benton?” Ray looked at the small group of penguins, He wasn't entirely sure which was which.

“Yes, Ray. I gave them the idea. They said it would be appropriate.”

“They know about us?”

“Yes, Ray.”

“Did they pair up the penguins before they knew?” Ray asked, noticing two penguins in particular seemed...close.

“Yes, Ray.”

“Gay penguins?” Ray could hardly believe it.

“They have been a number of cases of gay penguins.”

“Are they sure Ray is a girl?”

“They are. Although it doesn't matter, they seem...fond of each other already.” Fraser pointed to the half grown chicks that seemed to be following each other around the enclosure.

“Like I'm fond of you?”

“And I'm fond of you. The keepers have said we're welcome to visit any time. And they've already said we can name the first chick Ray and Benton produce. If there are any.”

Ray smiled. “Really?”

“Yes, Ray.”

“Maybe that date wasn't so bad after-all.”

Holding hands they stood and watched the penguins. They were pretty cute Ray decided. Already he was thinking of names.
