A Little Adventure
Ray looked around the bleak Illinois countryside. “Do you know where we are?” he asked Fraser.
Fraser was consulting the map. “Not exactly, Ray. This particular road doesn't appear to be on the map. I can try and triangulate our position.”
“So we're caribou now?”
“The same method applies. Although we could use the sun to work out latitude.”
Ray looked at the sky. “There is no sun, Fraser, there's only clouds.”
“Still, we should be able to discern the heat given off by the sun.”
“There's no sun on your nose,” Ray replied, pre-empting the next point.
“I didn't say I was using my nose.”
Ray sighed. “This is like the plane crash all over again.”
“We're not been in plane, Ray. The Riv unfortunately suffered a mechanical problem but we weren't hijacked.”
“The point is, we're sanded and we don't know where we are,” Ray said, raising his voice.
Fraser looked at the map again. “There's a river not far from here.”
“We are not turning the Riv into a raft.”
“Well we couldn't, Ray, it would probably sink due to the heaviness of the metal making up the frame.”
“Okay, so what's your plan? We swim for it?”
“It's a thought, Ray.”
Diefenbaker looked up at Fraser and whined.
“See, Dief doesn't want to swim either.”
“Well, our only other option would be to walk, Ray.”
“Walk to where?” Ray couldn't see any sign of life about.
“According to the map there's a motel about a mile from here.”
Ray frowned and looked around at the countryside. “Who builds a motel out here?”
“Perhaps someone who appreciates passing trade.”
“What, stranded motorists?”
“Maybe. It's a dangerous stretch of road.”
Maybe they're the ones sabotaging cars.”
“Ray, how could they possibly sabotage the Riviera? Or know that we were coming this way?”
Ray threw his hands up. “I don't know. How do you know it;s going to be open anyway?”
“I made reservations,” Fraser admitted.
“You knew we'd end up stranded in the middle of nowhere?” Ray knew Fraser was good at planning but this was beyond belief.
“No, Ray. We were headed there when we broke down.”
“Why were we headed there?”
Fraser blushed. “You said you wanted a getaway weekend, just the two of us.”
“So, you booked a creepy motel? It's probably run by an axe murderer.”
“Oh no, Mr Jim Fredericks doesn't have a criminal record.”
“And you know this how?”
“I met him at the hoteliers conference that was held at the consulate.”
“He's Canadian?”
Fraser smiled. “Yes, Ray. He was very interested to hear about I'd come to Chicago and met you. He offered us his best room.”
“You told him about us?”
“Yes, Ray. I thought we agreed we weren't going to keep our relationship a secret.”
“There's keeping it a secret and then there's not telling random strangers.”
“He's not a stranger, Ray. It turns out his mother knew my father.”
“Do all Canadians know each other?” Ray asked, sarcastically.
“No, Ray.”
“Okay, so let's start walking,” Ray said, taking a few steps.
Fraser stopped hum. “We don't need to, Ray. That phone call I made earlier was to the motel, Jim is sending his boyfriend to collect us and drive us to the motel.”
“Boyfriend? He's gay?”
Fraser seemed to smile at Ray;s surprise. “Yes, Ray. His motel caters to same sex couples.”
“Are there big beds?”
“Oh, yes, Ray.”
“And room service?”
“Yes, Ray.”
Ray began smiling now. “You know, Benny, maybe this isn't so bad after-all.”
“I'd hoped you'd feel like that.”
“And what about Dief?”
The wolf barked.
“It turns out Jim Fredericks has a husky called Sara. She and Dief got on very well at the conference.”
“Benny, I love you.”
“I love you too.”
Despite the fact they were in the middle of nowhere they started kissing. They were still kissing when Jim's boyfriend, Tony, pulled up in the car. He didn't have the heart to disturb them. They had plenty of time after-all. And it was fun to watch.
