Left to the Birds
Ray frowned as he approached Fraser who had some strange creature sitting on his desk. “What's that, Benny?”
“Anas platyrhynchos,” Fraser replied.
Now he was closer Ray could see what it was. “It's a duck.”
“Yes, Ray, otherwise known as the common Mallard.”
“What are you doing with a duck on your desk?”
“I'm guarding him, Ray.”
“Guarding him?”
“Yes, Ray.”
“What is he a witness in a shooting?” Ray asked. He wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.
“No, Ray, he's the beloved pet of the transport minister who's visiting Chicago to examine the El system.”
“A pet?”
“Yes.”
“Does he have a name?”
“Donald.”
“Donald...Duck...”
“Well, technically it would be Donald Mallard.”
“Technically he's a duck,” Ray pointed out.
“Yes.”
“You have to stay here with him?”
“Until the minister gets back, yes.”
“But we had plans, Benny,” Ray whined.
“We could take Donald with us.”
“I am not seeing a movie with a duck. They wouldn't let him in.”
“We could have dinner,” Fraser suggested.
“Oh yeah take a duck to a fancy restaurant where his cousins get cooked and eaten with sauce.”
“What do you suggest, Ray?”
“Just bring the duck and you'll see.”
“I'll leave a note for the minister, Ray, so he can find us.”
“So, I need to ell you where we going?”
“Please, Ray.”
“Okay, you don't want a surprise....”
“I don't want the minster to worry,” Fraser explained. “If you or Dief were taken somewhere I'd appreciate knowing where.”
“I'm not a duck.”
“No, Ray, but if you were, I'd like to know where you were.”
“Okay, we're going to the park.”
“All right, Ray.”
“You got anything to tie the duck up with?”
“The minister gave me this harness,” Fraser replied, holding it up.
“Great, let's go.”
An hour later Fraser had to admit this had been a good idea of Ray's. They were spending some quality together whilst Diefenbaker (who seemed to have no interest in ducks) and Donald got plenty of exercise. The harness the minter had fitted him out with was proving to be very useful to prevent Donald swimming off across the pond while they sat on the bench.
While they were sat on the bench they could hold hands, even share the odd kiss. The park was remarkably quiet. Although they weren't that aware of people walking last them for they were in an embrace when Fraser heard a gruff voice.
“Where's Ducky?”
They broke apart from the embrace and both of them blushed as they met the gaze of a middle aged gentlemen.
“Ah Minister, he's just over there.” Fraser pointed Donald out on the water.
The minister took the lead from Fraser. “Thank you for looking after him.”
“It was no problem, Mr Gibbs.”
Fraser saw Gibbs call Donald to him and the duck came happily swimming up to him. It was then he realised Ray hadn't said a word. “ Ray?”
“Gibbs? Mallard? Duck...”
“Are you all right, Ray?”
“No, I'm fine, I just had this weird dream.” Ray shook his head. “Never mind.”
“Are you sure, Ray?”
“Yeah. I mean it's a co-incidence.”
“It could have been a premonition, Ray.”
“That you were going to babysit a duck?”
“The human mind is an amazing thing.”
“It's also weird.”
Fraser stood up and took Ray's hand, helping him to his feet. “Shall we go home, Ray?”
“Yeah. One more thing, Benny.”
“Yes, Ray?”
“Just don't tell me you're babysitting Mother Goose tomorrow.”
“No, Ray. Mr Goose has a pet chicken.”
“What's he called?”
“Licken I believe.”
“You've got to be...just let's go home,” Ray said. He seemed rather pale.
Fraser wondered if now was really the proper time time to tell his lover about the egg he was hatching out in the apartment. He decided it could wait until they got home. After-all Ray was bound to ask why there was a nest on the bed. Fraser just hoped Ray wouldn't notice his wings.
