The Mountie and the Green Dragon - Rabbit
Fraser was in his and Ray’s cave finishing off another painting when his dragon walked in. Ray had gone out some time before and Fraser was pleased to see him back. Fraser gave Ray his full attention and as he did so he noticed Ray was standing rather strangely.
“Ray? Are you all right?”
“I’m fine, Benny.” Ray blushed. “I’ve erm...got something to show you.”
“Oh, what it is?” Fraser asked, intrigued.
“This.”
Ray stepped to one side and behind him was a small furry creature Fraser was easily able to identify.
“It’s a rabbit, Ray,” Fraser said, looking at it.
“Yeah. It’s a rabbit.”
“What are we going to do with this rabbit?”
“Keep it, as a…whatever you humans call it.”
“A pet?” Fraser suggested.
This seemed to pleased Ray who smiled. “Yeah, I brought you a pet, Benny.”
“Oh well, that’s very thoughtful of you, Ray. But we don’t have anywhere to keep it.”
“Him.”
“Him?”
“It’s a him, Benny.”
Fraser paused for a moment wondering how Ray knew that but he didn’t pursue it. “Does he have a name?”
“I was thinking you could name him.”
“I don’t know what to name a rabbit, Ray.”
“You named Dief,” Ray pointed out.
“That was different.”
“So, we name him after a famous Canadian then. Like Dief.”
“We could name him Pearson. After Lester Pearson.”
“Who was he?”
“He was the fourteenth Prime Minister of Canada.”
“So, we call him Lester, that’s a good name.”
Fraser had to admit it was a fine name for a rabbit. “All right, Ray. But we don’t have anywhere for Lester to live.”
“He can live with us.”
“In a cave? Rabbits don’t live in caves.”
“Neither do humans or wolves but we work out fine together.”
Fraser knew his wasn’t going to win the discussion. “Okay, then, Ray. How did you find Lester?”
“I was trying to find some more sticks for the fire when he ran out in front of me. He was being chased by some guy on horseback with a big dog.”
“He was being hunted?”
“Yeah and I mean look at him, he’s too small to be hunted.”
Fraser looked at the rabbit, at Lester. Growing up he eaten plenty of rabbits who had looked like Lester. “Not to a human.”
“He’s too cute to be hunted then.”
“Some people feel that about deer.”
“The point is he came to me for help and I thought - ‘what would Benny do?’ You’d help him I thought so I did.”
“How did you help him?”
“I scared off the hunter guy and his dog. I told Lester he was safe but I don’t think he speaks English or dragon. And he followed me home.” The last words were mumbled and Ray looked at the floor.
“He followed you?”
Ray looked up. “Okay, so I carried him part of the way but here’s here now. And he likes you.”
Lester was happily brushing up against Fraser. He stood on his hind legs and looked at Fraser longingly. Fraser gave in and stroked him.
“I can see that.”
“Can we keep him?”
“Well, he would make a good pet but he needs lots of vegetables for food,” Fraser said, already knowing it was a losing battle.
“I can find him vegetables.”
“We can keep him, Ray.”
“Thank you, Benny.”
Ray kissed him and Fraser knew he’d made the right decision.
“But I don’t; think it would be a good idea to have Lester sleep with us.”
“No, he’s going to have his own bed. Do you think Dief likes him?”
Hearing his name Diefenbaker trotted over. Fraser put Lester down and Dief sniffed and then licked Lester, barking his approval.
“He seems to,” Fraser noted. “Just don’t neglect him.”
“I won’t,” Ray said and patted the wolf. “I still like you Dief.”
“We need some carrots, Ray.”
“Carrots?”
“For Lester to eat.”
“Oh, right. I’ll go get some. They’re the orange tube things, right?”
Fraser nodded. “Yes, that’s them.”
“Okay,” Ray paused. “And I promise I won’t come back with another rabbit.”
“Thank you, Ray. I’ll see you soon.”
Ray gave Fraser a kiss before leaving. “Bye Benny.” He patted his furry friends. “Bye Dief. Bye Lester.”
Fraser watched as Ray left the cave and flew off in search of carrots. He smiled; Ray was a world away form the typical image of a dragon. After-all how many dragons brought home rabbits as pets? He smiled and turned back into the cave where Diefenbaker was playing happily with the latest addition to their family. It seemed Lester was here to stay and somehow Fraser didn’t mind at all.
