Ok,
Martin Donovan‘s
Apartment Zero is a film I reckon few have seen. It’s from 1988, and I have no idea why I hadn’t seen it then. I lived in France at the time, and it’s the type of movie that would have been shown there, n’est pas. Maybe it was on and I was too busy to notice, no matter, it’s a more than decent one. And a treasure to find out of the blue. The story’s hook is distasteful, and intriguing. The latter portion of the movie is lost somewhat, in contrast to the strong start. It stars
Hart Bochner and
Colin Firth as the protagonists. It has lots of other characters, though the story is about them. Perhaps because of it’s time, there’s a slight off focus on them, which is a no no. Would like to have seen that developed more, and the ending less hastily tied up. Hart Bochner is stunning in it, and wow he’s handsome. Exhibit One below
Martin Donovan also wrote the movie, has a very strong story, would make a super theatre production I reckon. That I would like to see. It must have been a stage-play at some point, it cries out for theatrical attention. Has a hint of twistedness that fans of
Almodóvar would find intriguing. Or those of
Colm Tóibín ‘s
The Story of the Night.
Warning: view below has spoiler after spoiler! ‘Tis a clever, stunning piece of montage.
