Depends on the size of the file it turns into, to be honest... and what animation program you're using. I use Animation Shop 3 because I find it to be the easiest and have professional-like results/quality.

The smaller the animated portion, the more frames you can squeeze in. I usually make it the way I want it to be (I try to keep it under 7 frames for an animation that is 100x100, and keep it under 20 frames for ones where the animated area is smaller) and then save it to see how big it is and then remove frames if needed in the event that it's 40kb or larger. From my experiences with icons, 40kb is kinda a joke with LJ claiming it as the file limit for userpics because I've found they have to be 39.9kb or less to work.

I hope that all makes sense. There are tons of various animation tutorials online using various programs. This site is probably one of the best for icon tutorials, although I've never used it myself. I use Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo XI and Animation Shop 3 for all my graphics because, in my opinion, they're just as good as Photoshop when it comes to quality and effects, except they are easier and faster to use. I hope that helps! :)

I've actually got the same programs you use (I'm still in need of lots of practise! ;D)

Thanks for the other site though! I just need to make when I get some since most of my online time is done during work! *is such a slacker* ;D
