“You want me to be your what?!” Exclaimed Inoo, half-shouting, his eyes wide open at the question.
“Shh! Not so loud. I want you to be my contract lover.” Takaki looked away as he felt himself going pink.
“Are you out of your mind? Is this some kind of joke, cause’ I’m not getting it.” said Inoo, frowning.
Takaki looks up and was about to say back when he saw Inoo’s frowning face. He fell silent for a few seconds, looking at Inoo’s face. He’s cute, with the frown and-wait! What am I saying? thought Takaki. He quickly shakes his head, trying to get that unwanted thought away from his mind. Inoo watched Takaki’s reaction and couldn’t help snigger at him. He’s actually kind of cute when he gets all shy...he he he..! Thought Inoo.
“Okay, here’s the reason. My parents want me to marry a girl who happens to be some chairman’s daughter. I don’t want her so I came up with an excuse..” Takaki stops half way, dreading to reveal the truth.
“Well, what was your excuse?” Asked Inoo curiously. Takaki fidgets in his seat. “That...that I was a...a...g-gay...” Inoo could barely hear the last word but it was enough to make him laugh. Inoo clutches his stomach as he laughs at Takaki.
“That’s enough. It’s not funny okay. Now my parents want me to bring him, as in my partner, home.” Said Takaki half-annoyed. Inoo stops laughing but he still had a smile on his face.
“Okay, I’ll stop but seriously, can’t you think of a better excuse?”
“I was in a rush okay, it’s not like I have a year to think of an excuse. So...will you do it?”
“Firstly, let me ask you a question?” Takaki looks at Inoo.
“Are you really gay?” Takaki chokes on his drink and coughs for a while before answering. “Hell no! I’m 100% straight. What about you?” Takaki looks at Inoo with a teasing look.
“Only when hell freezes up! I’m just as straight as any guy!” Said Inoo in a defensive mode.
“Well then, since you and I are straight it should be fine.” Inoo looks away, not wanting to meet Takaki’s eyes. “No it won’t. There is a problem. I-“ Suddenly the sound of Inoo’ phone stops him. Inoo answers the call.
“Hait, Inoo here. Who’s this?” Takaki drinks his coffee while Inoo talks to the phone. “Ah, Yama-chan. Is something wrong? ............ What?! Ryutaro collapsed?! Hang on, I’m on my way.” Inoo rushes out to his car, leaving a speechless Takaki behind.
At the car park, Inoo had trouble with his car. It won’t start no matter how many times Inoo tries. Suddenly a knock came on his window. It was Takaki, shaking his keys at Inoo’s face. “Let’s go.” Inoo snatches the keys and drives the car with Takaki beside him.
In just a few minutes, they arrived at the hospital. At the waiting room, Inoo saw Yamada and Chinen, both in distress.
“Ah, Inoo-chan! You’re here.” Inoo hugs the boys. “Where’s Ryutaro? Is he okay?” Yamada tries to tell Inoo between his sobs.
“I-I don’t know. We were just playing at home when Ryutaro suddenly collapses in p-pain. We called the hospital and n-now he’s with the doc-doctor...” Yamada couldn’t continue any more. Chinen was in tears, terrified at what he saw. Inoo tries to calm them down.
“Shh...it’s okay. Everything’s going to be fine. Ryutaro will be fine, trust me.” Yamada and Chinen stops crying but they still have tears in their eyes. Inoo looks at Takaki who was standing at the door.
“Could you..?” Before Inoo could finish, Takaki had already walked over and held the boys in his arms. “Go ahead. I’ll stay with them. You go ahead.” Inoo gives Takaki a grateful look and hurries off to see the doctor.
At the doctor’s office, Inoo didn’t like the result one bit.
“I’m sorry but it seems that Ryutaro has experienced a rupture in his appendix and needs surgery as soon as possible or else he won’t make it.”
Inoo fell silent, not believing his ears. One of his family members would die if he doesn’t do anything.
“What’s the cost of the surgery?” Asked Inoo. The doctor brings his fingers together and looks at Inoo with a serious look. “90’000 yen excluding lodgings.” Inoo leans back, shocked at hearing the fee. There was no way he had the money and even he did, he needs to spend it on the orphanage. The doctor seems to understand Inoo’s problem.
“You have about 2 days to think about it. For now, Ryutaro is stable but not for long.” Inoo thanked the doctor and leaves the room.
Back at the waiting room, Takaki had bought Yamada and Chinen ice-cream to cheer them up. Takaki stood up when he saw Inoo. “How is he? Does he need surgery?” Inoo ignores Takaki’s question and turns to Yamada and Chinen. “I already called Dai-chan and he’ll be here in few minutes. Why don’t you wait for him in Ryu-chan’s room? He’s in room 244.” Yamada and Chinen thanked Takaki for the ice-cream and went off. Takaki looks at Inoo, slightly worried.
“Uh...Inoo-kun?” Inoo had such a miserable look that even Takaki felt miserable.
“Can you take me somewhere? Just anywhere for me to think.” requested Inoo. Takaki understood and in just a few minutes, they were in Takaki’s car, driving at a steady pace along the road. He knows just the right place to take him.
They finally arrived at a hilltop, overseeing the city. Inoo got out of the car and sank into the soft, green grass. Takaki kept quiet and just observed him. Time passes by in silent but Takaki remains patience.
At last, Inoo spoke. “Ryutaro needs a surgery for his appendix. The surgery cost 90’000 yen. The doctor said I only have 2 days to decide. What do you think?” Takaki thought carefully before answering.
“I’m sorry about Ryutaro. I hope he’s fine. About the cost...I can help you but I too need your help in return.” Inoo props himself on his elbows.
“I know, you want me to be your contract lover. But what are the conditions?”
“Just act like you’re my partner in front of my parents and the rest is history. Are you in?” Inoo kept quiet fro a while, thinking hard. “Let’s say I accept your offer, can you pay the fee tomorrow?”
“Why tomorrow?”
“I need to think about it and discuss it with the others.”
“It’s fine by me. Just give me a call when you’ve decided.”
“Arigatou, Takaki-kun.”
“Are you ready to go back?”
“Em...yeah let’s go.”
