I've been meaning to talk to you about Dead Set. I KNEW you'd love it.
I'm not usually one for real horror but I watched the first one with the girls here and while we spent most of it going 'EW!' very loudly, we got hooked.
Basically everything Ih ave ot say is exactly what you've said. I liked it because it was a paraody only in the subtle sense. I think it was very REAL. In that you have to imagine the person who came up with it was probably watching Big Brother one year and mused 'Y'know, if something huge were to happen to the world, do you think the people in the hosue would know. Like a zombie apocolypse.'
I was SO so impressed with Davina. She's a very good actress. I mean I know she was playing a zombie for most of it and you could argue that's not hard but she really did it well. She must've had so much fun with that.
I'm one of the people who did see the ending coming but I don't think it was bad at all. The only reason I saw it coming was because I was just like 'there's only one possible outcome left for this..' and it was. That ending image was SO haunting though. *shudders*
And while walking back through a graveyard from a night out the other week me and the girls I used to lvie with ran into some people dressed as zombies, which started us talking about dead set and telling one of the girls who hadn't seen it and it was fun to see the differing opinions on the zombie's can't run' thing.
The one thing I maybe would've liked them to explore in the show is HOW this happened. But at the same time, you don't need to know. Maybe if it were a movie some explaination would help, but since you're thrown right in there..
I agree about Davina, she must've had a ball playing that role. I personally think that playing a zombie must be a lot harder than some people may think, especially a zombie as violent as that. I bet it was draining, especially for someone who doesn't usually do that sort of thing.
The only reason I saw it coming was because I was just like 'there's only one possible outcome left for this..'
I know what you mean about that, though - when the last episode reached its halfway point and the ad break started, me and Euan were commenting on how "There's only quarter of an hour left, how else are they going to end it?" - we did think it would be a bit too far-fetched to throw in an ending where all/some of them survive/escape in that tiny amount of time, so we did have our suspicions that it was not going to be a happy ending.
It would have been interesting to find out how the outbreak happened, but, at the same time, it may have run the risk of bogging the series down - and it is a very fast-paced series. It's kind of like in Shaun of the Dead - you don't need to know why it's happening, it just is, and these people just have to try and deal with it. I do like how you're just thrown in there with no explanation or exposition.
