Nobody gave me a chance to tell my story of what happened on 30th March during the biology field trip, everybody was quick to presume that it was my fault, even though they were not there to witness what happened, so this is what happened.
My friends and I were sitting on the bus eating our lunch at about 1.30pm, when we noticed a small group of people going across to the toilets, we also wanted to head in that direction so we joined the group. We were looking both ways to cross the road and there was nothing in sight coming from the right, but there was a small truck coming left, as the truck aproached we started to cross and once the truck had passed carried on accross the road. When we were about 2-3m from the edge of the road [gutter] I saw a cyclist coming from the left and warned the others who quickly ran to the other side, I started to move off but with a hesitation, wondering if it was to late as the cyclist was going a great speed, I was stil hesitating when the cyclist was definitly to close to even attempt to move off. I think my hesitation confused the cyclist as to wether or not I would cross in front of him, so he swerved to the right- just as i moved back [his right] to get out of his way. It was a misunderstanding that caused this, it was not my fault; or the cyclist's, it's a common thing that happens when two people are coming towards each other in a corridor and try to dodge each other and both 'swerve' the same way, the only difference was that one was on a fast moving bicycle. In my opinion it was not very fair to make me apologise to this man right after the event when I was clearly in shock [I could be seen skaking a lot from quite a distance], I had actually already apologised [repeatedly] before I had realised what had happened or started to suffer from the severe shock and pain that comes with something that happens that fast. Ms Burrell gave excellent first-aid to my injuries before Mr Curwen took me to the after-hours doctor he was instructed to take me to, but i do not think that she realised the extent of my injuries; i had in fact sprained and badly bruised [especially elbow area] my right arm, sustained a cut to my right palm and unusually fractured my left arm, which is in- and will be in a cast for 5 weeks.
There was no teachers present when this occured and got information on what had happened from students on the bus ride home as to what had occured, I checked with the two students that were directly next to me when this happened and they confirmed what I remembered had happened. I am not at all shifting the blame or saying it was not my fault at all, I am simply trying to tell the truth about what had happened as I think it was blown out of proportion.
