if a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, how many is a bird in the house worth?

Just had to share my morning adventure:

I opened the door out to the garage and there was a mourning dove sitting on the garage door motor box. As I carried Colin out to the car, he flew over my head and into the house!

I decided to strap Colin into his car seat, so he would be out of the way and safe from pecks and poop. I could see/hear the bird swooping around the house and running into things, and Roney chasing him and leaping into the air.

When I got into the house, took me a minute to find the bird, but he had landed on the bannister. I grabbed a shirt of Andy’s that was laying there, and tried to throw it over the bird. It then flew up the stairs and landed in the upstairs hallway window, trying to fly through the glass.

I took a minute to regroup (and call work and let them know I’d be late). I grabbed a broom, hoping to be able to shoo him out of the house.

The shooing did not work well, and the bird bunched itself into the corner of the window/wall. Since it really couldn’t fly from that position, I decided I could probably throw something over it now. I grabbed a towel and tried. The bird dropped down between the window/wall and the plant stand. I tried to get the towel over it there, and it went behind the plant stand and started hopping down the hall.

I went after it, hoping to prevent it from going into any of the bedrooms, and it turned around and took off, grazing the top of my head. It flew down the stairs and landed on the landing (hmmm, appropriate!) I was about to go after it with the broom again, when I realized it seemed somewhat stunned, and thought I may be able to get the towel on it now. Roney was standing at the bottom of the stairs, doing the cat butt wiggle about to pounce, so I threw the towel down the stairs and luckily landed it over the bird.

I was able to scoop it up in the towel and throw it out the front door, and it took off.

This stuff always happens to me - never Andy - like when the frog got in the family room and Ralphie was trying to catch it. Also, usually when I am sick. I was extra frustrated to find out that I was coming in again, despite my headcold, and Mark (my-comanager) called in again.

I’m just glad the dogs happened to be in the backyard at the time, otherwise the story may have been even more “entertaining” and/or potentially disastrous.
