For a really long time, it wasn't.
After his engagement with Lauren, and how badly things ended, he had no interest in an actual relationship; it was easier for him to have one night stands and move on before things got complicated and messy again. As time passed, it got easy for him to steer away from commitment, and after a while he even started believing that he really was better off without anything tying him down. In his eyes, love only managed to get in the way, made you think irrationally, and got you hurt unnecessarily in the end.
This went on for about five years. And he would get into relationships but, as much as he would grow to care for someone, it was never the way he wanted to feel while being in a relationship. So, he figured he was doomed and gave up completely.
But, of course, things come when one least expects it, yeah? The same thing happened with Michael and he fell in love with the woman that had become his best friend. He kept saying and saying how it wouldn't happen, how it was wrong for it to happen, how it was not happening, but...he was wrong. SO wrong. He fell in love with Tess, very deeply, even if at first they were only supposed to be friends.
Right now, especially with what's going on in his life, having Tess in his life is one of the most important things in his life. He wants to finish with the problems he has so that he and Tess can travel and get married, because he already semi-proposed. Her and their plans is what's giving him strength to continue, and is giving him a hope that things have to get better later on instead of going into things blindly without caring if he'll come out alive or not. So, right now? I think romantic love really is important for him.
