After
that day at the mall with his sister, Michael had finally been able to find a present for Tess. It had been hard to pick something, especially because nothing had seemed good enough even if Hannah kept insisting that what she had found was the perfect thing, but there was no going back now. Now he just hoped that she'd like what he had gotten her. Birthdays and presents always got him way too insecure about whatever decision he had made regarding the actual gift, and this time... Well, this time it was worse than usual.
He knew that it would have been easy to call her, meet somewhere so he could give her the present personally now that he was in New York, but he couldn't bring himself to do so. Part of his reasoning was that she would probably be busy and didn't need him to barge into her plans. After all, her boyfriend was probably taking her out to celebrate or had planned something, since he was her boyfriend. Michael, as just a friend, had no right to interfere or interrupt anything.
...Michael, bitter?
Yeah. Just a tad.
But that didn't matter. What mattered was that it was the birthday of one of his best friends, and he was happy for her. He really was, he just had his moments where his hurt feelings would win out despite how hard he tried to keep them away. But, again, that didn't matter.
By noon she'd receive a package where the giftwrapped box was in, along with a birthday card.
The card:
Tess,
Happy birthday!
You know, this year I can honestly say that I probably wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you. Or, at least, I wouldn't be where I am now. You have been so wonderful to me, and all I can really say to that is just...thank you. I may have complained about quitting heroin, but now I am glad for it. Can you believe that you quit smoking, and I quit heroin, a month and a half ago? (Feels like forever, though, doesn't it? But hey, look how far we've made it.)
Hannah helped me pick out the gift(s) I'm sending you, so I hope that you like them. And, you know, if you don't, we can just blame her. (Kidding. Sort of.) But really, if you don't, you can exchange it for something else.
Thank you, Tess. For everything. I hope you have a very happy birthday.
Love,
Michael
P.S: For the one in the little box, you don't have to wear it. It just came that way, but it can just be kept in the box as well. I just thought...you know, that it was appropriate.
Inside of the giftwrapped box, there was a small blue box that had a
watch inside, and another smaller wooden box that held
a small key in a thin silver chain.
About the key, from a website: The Masini Gioielli Friendship Key is an universal symbol of power and authority since the Medieval times, keys represent the most precious gift to important people. The design of this key of Friendship is taken from a French key: the intricate design with a central ivy leaf symbolizes strong relationships and Friendship."
