and then proceeded to get far too drunk and throw up all over the place. This was not, in fact, my reaction to the book, which I was on the whole very satisfied with.

- WHERE WAS ZACHARIAS SMITH?
He pushed in front of the first-years to evacuate. Good sense of self-preservation, that one.
Which I was annoyed about at first because she/Harry basically dismissed him as a lamer pansy but I feel better about it now. The paragraph in my updated bio for him about that was fun to write:
"When Potter deigned to return to school, and it became clear that they were going to have to fight, at first Zacharias was determined that he would stay and help. The idea of leaving his friends in mortal peril while he dallied off to frolic through meadows of flowers was laughable at best; he'd never be able to look any of them in the eye again, presuming of course that they survived to look upon, which was all rather up in the air. After brief thought though, and seeing how many other people were leaving, he decided that staying to die in Saint Potter's name would be incredibly stupid and he was sure he could work things out with his friends later."
Ah, bless.
Convince me not to write the epic saga in which Lavender Brown and Zacharias Smith meet each other at a ministry function and fall in love because it can only end badly.
