Over on iyfic_contest I entered this little drabble for the prompt Abnormality.

Title: Vigil

Prompt: Abnormality
Rating: K+
Words: 250
Summary: CU. Two warriors remain strong, despite their respective weaknesses.

Huffing, Sango adjusted hiraikotsu against her shoulder. This scrutiny was truly unsettling.

A sly sidelong glance proved that she was still being watched. Hazel eyes dropped to the side immediately as they met his intense violet stare. She was used to Miroku watching her like he was calculating his next move. She was used to Kagome’s kind glances. She was used to Inuyasha’s golden-eyed stare, faintly challenging.

Yet, on these nights, the moon wasn’t the only absentee. Those familiar gold eyes were swallowed by pensive violet. The human Inuyasha was more broody than his hanyou counterpart. Kagome called him sulky.

Even now, he kept watch. Even though he didn’t have the advantage of his hanyou strength, even though he couldn’t gain the high ground due to Kagome’s insistence he remain close, even though the fang at his shoulder wouldn’t respond on this night. He sat near the door in silent vigil.

Sango’s fidgeting had resulted in her mirroring Inuyasha’s posture.

“Get some sleep,” she whispered to him, mindful of their sleeping comrades.

One dark brow arched. “Why don’t you?”

“I can keep watch,” she insisted.

A soft snort was issued. “You’re running a fever.”

Brown eyes widened in shock.

“I’m like this, but at least I ain’t ill.”

“How did you...”

“I’m human, not blind,” he snipped, “now, sleep or you’ll be the one slowing us down.”

Concern masked by abrasive behaviour. Sango allowed her heavy eyelids to slide close, comforted by his familiar behaviour regardless of the moonless night.
